    Chapter One: Present Day

    Job Offer

On a crisp fall night while walking his dogs, Scott had an unnerving feeling that something watched him. It sent chills up his spine and made his feet travel a little quicker. The full moon bathed the alley in a beautiful ivory color, which normally brought him a calm peaceful feeling. Instead he felt watched, like prey in the sights of some unknown predator.

Both dogs stopped abruptly. Their hackles rose and a fierce growl rolled from their throats.

After the threatening growls came the instant leash pulling. The large dogs had a lot of combined strength so he stood firm. Straining against their leashes, the dogs tried to inch forward. Something upset them at the end of the alley where it opened to the next street.

A young girl with curly hair poking out of a hood stood ten feet directly in front of them. The moonlight shone across her nose, mouth and chin while her eyes remained in shadow. Dressed in a black jacket and dark jeans, she seemed the height and build of his fourteen year old daughter.

Sorry. Scott called as the dogs’ constant pulling made him shake in place. He strained his muscles and stiffened his legs while the dogs tried to pull him towards the potential threat.

She replied with a strange smile, No, it’s my fault. I’m a stranger and they’re simply doing their job.

His arms ached as the dogs lunged forward. Scott began to force them back, knowing if he let them win, they’d hurt the girl and probably gain him a nice lawsuit.

Coco! Kirby! Chill! Come on. We’ll go the other way. Agonizing pain burned through his muscles. Normally obedient, the dogs refused to listen.

The girl didn’t seem the slightest bit afraid. She calmly began to step forward. There is no need to leave. Her voice had an unearthly tone to it.

The mysterious girl continued to approach him. While she resembled a teen, she carried herself like a seasoned adult.

Whoa! Don’t get too close. he warned, watching his dogs carefully.

She stared at the dogs and for the briefest moment he could’ve sworn her eyes were red. The girl spoke with a calm, almost hypnotic voice. It’s alright. They won’t hurt me now.

The leashes instantly went slack. Scott looked down to see the dogs calmly sitting.

She approached them, kneeled down and began to scratch their necks and behind their ears. They flopped to the ground to allow her access to their bellies.

How did you do that? he asked.

She looked up and smiled. Her hood still obstructed her eyes. Don’t be afraid. I won’t hurt you. My name is Annabelle Foresight and there is something you need to understand. I calmed your dogs using simple mesmerization.

All right. Scott thought, I picked the one alley in town with a psycho-teen. He began to back up, pulling the dogs with him. That’s nice. Everyone should have a skill. Um... it’s late and I should go home. Heck, you should go home. Isn’t it past your curfew? You’re what? Fourteen?

A smile crept across her face. I’m much older than that. Please don’t go. I need you to do something for me.

His blood froze as the moonlight glinted off her fangs. The crazed teenager actually had implanted fangs. Scott always loved a good vampire story but this kid was wacko.

A closer look revealed just how wacko. Her eyes blazed crimson and her skin was deathly pale. Combined with her sharp canine teeth, the girl captured the vampire look better than Hollywood.

Annabelle stood up calmly and continued, I can tell by your elevated heart rate and expression that you realize what I am. I will not harm you. Yes, it’s true I’m a vampire but I do not feast on humans.

Good for you. He continued to pull at the dogs. Come on. Move! They sat, transfixed. He snapped his fingers and yanked at their leashes but the dogs wouldn’t budge.

Scott looked back at Annabelle. I really should be going. Maybe I’ll see you at the local haunted hospital this Halloween?

He turned and his heart leapt to his throat. Impossibly, Annabelle stood in front of him, blocking the way he’d come. She’d moved around him without his noticing.

Listen closely. I’ve lived for over three hundred years. Some friends of mine have informed me that my end is coming. Someone very powerful will soon unleash an army, the likes of which mortals have never seen. I plan to stop him with my own army, but I may not live through it.

Once confident, Annabelle seemed to shrink a little. Her strong pose relaxed a bit and Scott could actually see fear in her eyes.

Something in the girl’s face suggested honesty. She continued, "Those friends I spoke of have a knack for predicting the future. They’ve never been wrong. They suggested it would be good to tell
