    Introduction

So you want to work from home? Most work-from-home books usually cover all the aspects of at-home work, from setting up your home office to how to get a business license. Check out my book, Hired at Home: The Christian Woman’s Guide to Working From Home, for a detailed guide on how to work from home.

But you bought this book because you want real jobs or businesses you can do from home. Each listing has the job’s description, educational and skill requirements, job outlook, possible employers or markets, preparation steps and how to get started. More than half also have a testimony from someone who actually does that job or has that business.

While I’ve tried to verify all the leads and websites, please do your own due diligence when researching your chosen job or business. Remember, that you should not have to pay for job leads or information, but you will have to pay for certifications and licenses relating to your business.

But before you turn the page and read about potential at-home jobs or businesses, first, let’s take a brief look at some of the overall employment trends and which work-from-home jobs have future potential. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, projected employment growth is concentrated in the service-providing sector, continuing a long-term shift from the goods-producing sector of the economy. From 2008 to 2018, service-providing industries are projected to add 14.6 million jobs, or 96 percent of the increase in total employment.

Behind these dry statistics lie lots of ideas for home-based businesses with great growth potential. In general, service businesses often fit into a stay-at-home mom’s schedule and can be ideal for home-based businesses because they involve little or no inventory and have relatively low start-up costs.

With service-based work, many women have honed the skills necessary to be successful by simply serving their families, church, and communities. Many of the things you already may excel at are the basis for these service-based businesses.

Consider the following areas of job growth and how those areas can translate into home-based businesses or work-from-home opportunities.

Education and health services: child-birth instructor, child-care provider, elder-care provider, massage therapist, medical transcriptionist, nanny-finding service, and tutor.

Professional and business: computer-repair/upgrade technician, IT solutions and maintenance engineer, and computer system and network security maintenance engineer.

Information: data processor, desktop publisher, editor, graphic artist, greeting-card writer,
