About the Author
INTRODUCTION
Some Job Hunting Elbow Room
Whether you live where you do out of preference, necessity, a spouse’s job, or myriad other reasons, non-major metropolitan living has its pluses.
Enjoy the Commute or Lack Thereof
The average commute time in the United States, according to a Bureau of Transportation Statistics survey¹, is just over 26 minutes. Another survey² shows that in large cities such as New York (38.3 minutes), Chicago (33.2 minutes), Philadelphia (29.4 minutes), and Los Angeles (29 minutes), commute time exceeds that average time. These statistics should not lead you to believe that medium to small-sized cities are free of all traffic problems. I figure, though, that living where you do not have traffic helicopters buzzing overhead and 24 hour traffic alert radio stations gives you a better chance for smoother driving.
A House Price That Keeps You From Having to Mortgage Your Pets and Children
In many cases, housing prices and the cost of living are lower in less populated areas. Have you noticed how people move out to suburban areas in search of lower housing costs? How about the big city job transplants who are pleasantly surprised that they get so much more house for the money just outside of big city commuting range.
Ah! Smell the Country Air
Get out of the big city and smell the fresh country air. Don’t commercials, movies, and books often romanticize escape from life in the frenetic metropolis? Even detergent makers are getting into the act with scents designed to evoke visions of the bucolic countryside when you wear those freshly washed jeans.
Although not every small place is a bed of fresh smelling roses, less populated areas may have an advantage in general. According to the State of the Air: 2007
report by the American Lung Association³, some of the country’s largest cities/metro regions can be found among the list of most polluted by short-term particulates. It makes logical sense that more people means more output in many cases. Of the 26 cities with the cleanest air record regarding short-term particulate pollution, only 6 had populations over 400,000 persons.
Less Crowd, Less Crime (Generally)
As with pollution, more people concentrated in an area often leads to more crime. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics⁴, almost one-quarter of U.S. homicides occur in cities with populations greater than a million. Additionally,
