Introduction
In the first year, every new business needs to be able to 'hit the ground' running otherwise, they will be swallowed up by their competitors. Marketing is a key string in any successful company’s bow and is overlooked at their peril.
With this in mind, I wrote this marketing book to help the new start-up to understand the fundaments of Marketing. It is an easy read and is in plain English with absolutely no jargon. You will learn how to build a brand that is not focussed on a 'once off' sale but focussed on building relationships that last and why you need to look at the lifetime value of your customers.
This way of doing business will not only increase your profitability but will sustain your business for the long-term.
People think that Marketing is about brochures, websites, being active on social media and advertising. Of course, these are important, but effective marketing goes beyond that. It is about having a meaningful relationship with your customers that will stand the test of time. Marketing also helps the small business to look at the bigger picture.
When you are starting a business, you need to try to imagine what your business is going to look like in three years’ time. I know this can be a difficult task for start-ups to have to look three years ahead. Their focus is on their first year and getting through it in one piece. This is understandable.
However, you need this long-term vision as it helps you to think beyond just survival and focus on long-term growth. We all know that we cannot make a journey without a destination in mind. If we start out on the road to running a business and we have no idea where we are going to end up, how will we know when we have arrived, if we ever arrive that is?
I wanted to take the mystery out of marketing so this book is written in a story format to help you understand the sometimes complex jargon of Marketing. It tells the story of Millie and Matthew, two young mousepreneurs, yes you have read correctly, two young mice that were made redundant. They decided to start up their own business called The Cheese Mall in a very competitive retail environment with no clue how to begin the process. They have to learn as they go along.
The book follows Millie and Matthew on their journey and explores key marketing principles that are easy to understand and follow. The core message of The Cheese Mall is that marketing is all about serving the customer and putting them at the centre of everything you do and every decision that you make.
In this book, you will look
