About this ebook

Alien "Gods" rule the Earth, but their dominion is an increasingly uneasy one. Rama, a temple-palace enforcer, does his best to maintain order. But when the alien Blue God summons him, and tells him to arrest Rawana, Rama's arch rival, events take a dramatic turn for the worse. Rawana has betrayed the Blue Gods in favor of their enemies, the Cold-Dark Dwellers. Fleeing the temple-palace, he kidnaps Sita, Rama's wife.

Now Rama must not only kill or capture Rawana, but somehow save his wife, as well. And then when the Ape King warns him of war, events take an even worse turn. Somehow, he must save his beloved Sita. Then they must make their way in an uncertain and dangerous world. Faced with the angry "Blue Gods," conspiracies of evil aliens, the dire warnings of the Ape King, and ultimately even nuclear devastation when total war breaks out, they must find their way to sanctuary--but where?

    ANCIENT ALIENS

    A Novella

    By

    Rob Shelsky

Once, during the great war between the Kauravas and the Pandavas…

All talking ceased. Vyasadeva sat with legs crossed on the far side of the fire, away from the rest of us. It was a self-imposed isolation. The crackling orange flames leapt high. Aromatic smoke curled upwards in thin tendrils. Vyasadeva’s eyes, like twin stones of polished obsidian, glittered with the reflection of those crimson sparks, as they erupted into the anthracite night. We knew he stared not at us now, but into the distant past, for his gaze was unfocused. These were sure signs the one we called the Toothless Tiger was about to tell an ancient tale.

And during that time so long ago, when men still consorted with the Gods in their battles, it was then that the hero, Rama, and his beauteous wife, Sita, lived, and loved. I also speak of Rawana, the Evil One, pawn of the Cold-Dark Gods, and betrayer of Krishna. I speak of the final war of the Gods.

The blaze flared up a moment, casting a transient ruddy glow onto Vyasadeva’s dark and time-etched face. I will tell you, he continued, "of Rama’s first meeting with the Ape King, leader of the Twilight People. Of these things, you shall hear tonight before the monsoon comes to quench our blaze, for it is very close now.

Ajamila, you who are named for the debauched one, will you now play for me while I speak of these things?

The ragged beggar, that untouchable who hovered in the outer darkness just beyond the edge of our group and our lives, nodded, but he uttered not a word. As a shadow, he reached for his instrument. As a silhouette, he plucked strings from his one possession, Ajamila’s lone treasure, his sitar. Its haunting music floated to us on the still night air…

It is too hot for this hunt. Rama’s profusion of golden arm bracelets rattled, as he hefted the heavy wooden spear. He had been leaning against the shaft of it for support. This heat is stifling, Rawana. As he said this, he gazed out at the baked and barren land surrounding them. Nothing in sight moved. There were just the still forms of a few errant scrub plants, but little more to alleviate that seemingly endless and ochre-colored expanse.

Would that the Gods would share their secrets on how to stay cool, said the other man, as he glanced up at the white-hot sky. Now he pointedly focused his stark gaze upon Rama, as he added, Their temple-palaces are always cool, the air in them sweet. But they jealously guard the knowledge of how to accomplish such.

Rama nodded, a bit impatiently, he knew. Yes, they do. But is it not better that way?

Better for us to bake when we could be cool? Why do you always say this sort of thing?

Rama’s muscular shoulders lifted in a deliberately casual shrug. "I just think their secrets involve things it is best we know nothing of. We do their
