Learning and Technology: A Brief Introduction

Citing examples of learning is fairly easy. Concisely defining learning however, is not easily accomplished. Understanding learning allows you to make the most effective use of technology within your classroom.

    What is Learning?

The concept of learning is broad and as such defining learning is not a process that is easy. Consider the following definitions of learning: Change in behavior as the result of experience. An enduring change in behavior or in the capacity to behave in a given fashion resulting from practice or other forms of experience (Schunk, 1996, p.445); A persisting change in performance or performance potential that results from experience and interaction with the world (Driscoll, 2005, p.1). In considering each of these definitions of learning we see that change occurs through experience or some manner of interaction with the environment. Learning occurs when an individual’s level of ability or knowledge is changed in a permanent manner through the individual’s interaction with

the environment (Woolfork 2003). According to (Woolfork 2003), if an individual experiences changes simply as the result of maturation such as growing taller or turning gray, then these changes are not considered learning.

    Enhancing Learning Through Learner-Centered Approaches

Today’s learners have the ability to quickly obtain, analyze, manipulate and communicate information in greater detail now more than in any other time in our history. According to research in the area of teaching and learning during the past decade, a great way for educators to effectively meet the needs (e.g., ability to analyze information, make decisions, solve complex real world problems, etc.) of today’s learners is to make a shift in the way in which learning is planned and implemented. Today’s learners will require teachers to move from a position of complete control of dispensing knowledge and information to a position of considering the learner’s role in planning, implementing and self-evaluation of instruction. This approach, focusing on the learner is known as learner centered instruction.

A learner centered instructional approach changes the teacher’s role from that of one who dispenses knowledge and information to a role of a guide and facilitator who helps learners in the achievement of learning goals. Within a learner-centered instructional approach, the learner’s role is to interact and engage with sources of potential information including but not limited to the teacher, media, parents, technology and the like in an effort to seek an understanding of a problem and create possible solutions. Technology and media are tools used by teachers to engage students in learning and used correctly these tools represent powerful possibilities for improving learning. The sheer diversity of learners and information will require that teachers of 21st century learners be able to vary

their instructional approaches using different methods and media for designing and developing learning experiences.

Technology and Media: Tools for Learning

In the quest of helping learners acquire new knowledge, there is no doubt that the roles of

the teacher and learner will shift based on many factors including the learning situation, the content, and the needs of the learner. Often technology and media are used to support the presentation of instruction in teacher-centered instruction. The successful use of technology and media requires much more than selecting technology and media to use in instruction. In order for these tools to be effective for learning, teachers must carefully plan and select appropriate resources.

Students engaged in learner-centered instruction become the primary users of technology
