      LOVE AND ROSES

      THE GOOD MAN

      Jose did gardens. That was his job. He had been working in Beverly Hills doing this job for almost three years since he came to the states from Mexico.

      Today was not really that different compared to every other day, but there was one difference. The company had assigned him to work with Maria.

      Maria was a short beautiful woman with curly brown hair and deep brown skin. She was an amazing woman and Jose always found the very rare occasion to work with her exciting.

      The problem was that she was late. He looked at his watch. Maria was a good honest woman. It was strange that she wouldn't turn up on time.

      Maybe she was sick. He wondered who her replacement would be. Hopefully not his brother Santos. They would get no work done if that joker came here.

      Jose went back to his gardening. He would do his share and hope that someone came to help him.

      THE LOVE INTEREST

      Maria came through the gates in her overalls and apologized to Jose. He was upset. He had worked almost half the day now and the company had told him she was coming.

      He was tempted to yell at her, but looking on her he couldn't bring himself to do it. She was the most beautiful 18 year old he had ever met.

      They set to work and the conversation lightened to non-work related topics. Maria was having some troubles with her father that she wouldn't go into detail about, but Jose understood the implication. Things were getting serious at home and she was feeling pressured about something.

      They talked for awhile. The work finally came to an end and Maria stood up and wiped the sweat off her tanned skin.

      You know, I broke up with Tony a few weeks ago.

      Tony was her long time boyfriend. He had been famous among the other gardeners as a man who loved to drink and often was late for work.

      Really? He seemed so nice. Jose was always polite in these sorts of situations.

      Yeah, he said he wants to go to New York to become an actor, she added.

      Tony would make a horrible actor. He couldn't remember his own name half the time when he was drunk. How was he going to remember endless lines of dialogue?

      Maria laughed.

      Why do you look so serious, Jose? she said, I'm not that upset about it. We both knew that we were coming to an end. It is only natural that two people either grow together or grow apart.

      Jose could understand. He had just almost past his 30th birthday and had already been divorced for two years. He was more than familiar with how relationships worked.

      I'm not so upset, he said, More thinking that it is a pity it didn't work out between you two.

      She smiled.

      I was really late today, Jose, she reminded him.

      So?

      Would you like to go out for a drink after we get cleaned up?

      He was surprised, but it was a nice offer. He liked Maria and it wouldn't be like they were going on a date or anything. He had drunk with her and Tony before. It would be nice to sit and chat with a beautiful woman after work.

      Alright, I have to fill in the paper work. How about we meet in the car park outside the company in an hour?

      She smiled her cute smile and picked up her equipment. They would have more time to talk later.

      GOOD MORNING!

      Jose woke up in the morning and rolled out of bed. There was a note on the dresser in Spanish.

      Thanks for the great night! XXX Maria.

      How had that happened? They had been drinking and then she had said she wanted to see his house. He had agreed in a drunken haze and took her back home.

      He went to the kitchen and made a coffee. What had followed that was like a dream. If he had thought that she was incredible with her clothes on, he had not anticipated his response to her naked. They had done it until the early morning. He felt like a sixteen year old with his first girlfriend. It was a tantalizing sensation.

      He stood up and went into the shower. Even thinking of her like that made him blush. He had had much too much to drink and the result had been very pleasing indeed.

      Jose had to work today, so he put on his overalls and went to the company. He asked if Maria had come to work today and the clerk told him she was sick today.

      He grinned broadly. It seemed like she had enjoyed herself a little too much as well.

      OFFICE GOSSIP

      He walked into the small office a few hours later. His brother Santos was sitting on the one and only stool in the reception chatting to the clerk.

      So her father was very angry and told her he was sending her back to Mexico, Santos was saying.

      Really? She was such a nice girl. I never would have thought, the clerk replied.

      Santos, have you called mother yet? She told me you haven't been keeping in contact enough lately, Jose said.
