      CHAPTER 1

      Damian, you cheater! Earl Cutter raced around the corner of the building and slammed on his brakes. In a cloud of dust he added, I saw you cut through the Sandovals' front yard. I'm never racing you again.

      Damian Stillwell propped his new twelve-speed against the white brick wall of Coolie's Ice Cream Igloo and turned to Earl. You never said we couldn't take a shortcut. Besides, I'm still trying to get used to all the gears.

      Earl flung his bike down on the gravel.

      Watch it, Earl! Damian cried, grabbing his handlebars. You almost knocked over my bike.

      Sorry, Earl mumbled at his feet.

      Damian punched his arm. "Don't get mad. I can't help it if I got a new TREK for my birthday
