    Prologue

    I shouldn't be doing this. It's wrong!

Seraphina stood in the doorway of the all-night bowling alley and studied the man bowling alone. As he reached for another ball, a fringe of sandy hair fell across his forehead, hiding his green eyes. He moved with feline grace as he sent the ball flying down the lane. At another time she might have been interested in all that lean muscle in action, but tonight she had more important priorities.

The compact elegance of his movement marked him as something more than human, drawing her scrutiny. He’d been playing his solitary game for some time now. It was apparent no one would be joining him. That made him a good target.

She crossed the threshold, pulling up her hood and keeping her head down to avoid any unnecessary attention. Her conscience gave her a mental kick, but she ignored it. She’d been on the run for days now. She needed a place to hide out for a while. Somewhere they wouldn’t expect.

She took a seat at the bar and ordered a beer she couldn’t afford. He’d notice her, he just had to. She was counting on it. Day was coming and she was out of options. If he didn’t see her, if he didn’t take the bait she didn’t know what she’d do. She sipped her beer.

    And waited.

    Chapter One

As far as all-night establishments went, the bowling alley was far from the worst. Jonah made it a personal policy to stay out of the bars. Not that alcohol had much of an effect on his kind. After awhile the scene just got to him. In the many years he'd walked the Earth, he’d seen pretty much all of what the seedy side of life could offer.

So when he saw the young girl sitting alone at the bar, at first he'd taken her for another runaway looking for a warm place to spend the night. He was surprised that they'd served her. Realizing he was staring he jerked his eyes away and sent his ball careening down the lane. One by one he watched the pins fall. In all those years he'd built up a number of skills.

Turning away from his solitary game, he headed for the bar to procure a beer of his own. That way he could take a surreptitious look at this newcomer on his patch.

The bartender nodded as he approached. He was well-known here. As long as he didn't make a habit of snacking on the other bowlers, they seemed happy enough to have his patronage.

Jonah swung onto a barstool and ordered a beer, being careful to observe the girl only out of the corner of his eye. Up close she was older than he'd first thought, early twenties probably. Old enough to drink in any case. She wore a black hoodie, pulled up over her raven hair. Beneath the baggy shirt he caught a glimpse of a lean, shapely body. Her skinny black denim jeans were tucked into thigh high black suede boots. Eyes as dark as night swept from his head to his feet and instantly dismissed him. He could have sworn he saw a flicker of interest in them first.

Women were either drawn to or repulsed by him. It was as if they sensed the predator, the unnatural in him. To be so quickly ignored irked him because for the first time in a long time a woman stirred his curiosity for more than blood. He lived a quiet existence, some would call it boring. Even in this modern world of outed vamps he liked to keep his true nature hidden most of the time. His vampiric charisma was useful when he wanted a meal or just some company. Perhaps that was it. Maybe it hadn't been diversion that had brought him out tonight. Could it be he needed companionship more than he'd realized?

Well, he wasn't going to get it from the woman in the hoodie. One swipe of that dark gaze and he was apparently no more interesting than the unfortunate mural behind the bar. He studied her while she
