    The room was dark; it was always dark. No windows, only a small vent above the door let in stale air, and a panel was opened so the guards could drop food in. Stories spread through the prison about the cell in the basement of the old prison, the only cell in the basement of the old prison. The stories varied, but most agreed that around 1892 a man was brought there in chains. Nobody saw the man ever again but the guards kept bringing food there and men in suits, some said lawyers others said police officers, came by on a regular basis for sixty years. By 1955, however, the only thing that went down there were the guards with food. And the food itself was strange; a one pound strip of beef. Raw.

    Nobody ever believed the story when they first came to the prison. Then they would see one of the guards carrying the food. Some prisoners, if they were close enough, could sometimes hear screaming. The guards ignored it; they were paid to forget about that one cell. The prisoners feared it. They feared what was brought there over a century ago and still lived to howl like a beast.

    One summer day, they all found out.
