    A.M. Burns started writing in high school for a way to pass the time. Over the years his writing and imagination have developed to the point where he was ready to share his stories with the world. He has a vast love of nature, and hopes that is conveyed in his writing. In his adult life he has lived in California, Colorado and Texas. He is a member of the Colorado Springs Fictions Writers Group. A lifelong love of birds, lead him to become a falconer and he currently enjoys hunting with his tiercel red-tailed hawk Zephyr. In addition to his hawk he shares his home with several dogs, a couple of cats, various rodents, a pair of horses and his loving partner.

      Belly of the Beast

      Ethan Samuel Peter’s foot slipped again on the steep slope of the canyon wall. Dark red pebbles danced downward falling toward the small rocky creek some hundred feet or so below him.

      I told you to wear better shoes, his partner, Dusty Davenport, chided him for what felt like the thousandth time. Every since they had been scrambling through the rough terrain, he’d been reminding Ethan to wear better shoes.

      I’m sorry I don’t own all-terrain shoes like you do, Ethan snapped. The blazing desert sun was starting to make him irritable. I’m a city boy.

      Why don’t we stop for a minute? We could use a rest and some water. Silver Phantom Dancer, their friend and client, suggested. She sat herself down on a large, stable rock that stuck out of the canyon wall, pulled out her water bottle and took a long drink from it, before brushing a few strands of long dark hair from her face.

      Dusty followed her example and handed a bottle of water to Ethan, who stared with disgust at the compass he held.
