    Spiders Silken Thread

It was a scorching hot day and Bouncey the Elf was having a swim in the River of Dreams, trying to keep cool. Closing his eyes, he took a deep breath and dived under the water, his legs kicking and splashing. When he opened his eyes Bouncey saw that the bottom of the river was covered with smooth pebbles and fronds of river grass, which seemed to wave to him as he swam by.

As Bouncey glided along the river bottom, a group of green and yellow striped fish darted into the fronds of river grass and a shy crayfish scuttled away into a dark opening of an underwater cave.

Quickly rising to the surface of the river for a breath of fresh air, Bouncey then dived down and swam into the underwater cave to follow the crayfish.

It went dark very quickly and Bouncey lost sight of the crayfish and then he had a thought that maybe he had been a little reckless.

Bouncey was known by all of the other elves as being brave and courageous but at the same time very curious.

So, feeling his way very carefully by touching the slimy walls of the underwater cave, Bouncey went in, deeper and deeper until he felt the pebbly floor of the cave suddenly hit his knees.

Looking up, Bouncey saw a shiny patch of light reflecting in the water.

So, just in time, Bouncey poked his head above the water and took a big, big breath.

'Oooh! That's better,' he said, his voice echoing round the pool that he had just emerged into.

The pool was inside a large cave, about 25 metres wide and Bouncey could see because hanging from the roof of the cave were several clumps of a glowing fungus.

‘Wow!' cried Bouncey looking around the cave. On the edge of the pool he saw leaning against the wall two spears and a large fishing net drying on the cave floor. A basket made out of strange looking material lay next to the net.

'Wow!' said Bouncey again as he climbed out of the pool, disturbing a shoal of green and yellow striped fish as he did so.

Standing up, Bouncey shivered. 'Oooh! It's cold in here'. He was only wearing his swimming trunks and shivering again he decided to look inside the basket.

It contained, Bouncey saw, a pile of odds and ends. A shell tied to a piece of string, a box full of wriggling grubs, a tangled fishing line but best of all a grey coloured tunic rolled up amongst all the other stuff.

The tunic, smelling of fish of course, was big enough to fit Bouncey. So feeling much warmer after he had put it on Bouncey looked for a way out of the cave.

Walking by the two spears Bouncey saw the entrance to a small tunnel, which also had clumps of the glowing fungus hanging in it.

Not knowing what to expect, Bouncey crept slowly along the narrow tunnel. After a while he heard a sort of clicking, scratching noise.

Bouncey stopped and listened and then, creeping round a bend in the tunnel, he gave a loud gasp.

'Oh no! Spiders.' cried out Bouncey in alarm.

Lots and lots of large hairy spiders were everywhere, hanging down from the roof of the tunnel on long spiders web threads. Some were running in a horrible, scuttling way, up and down the walls, each one leaving a long thin strand of silken web thread.

Suddenly there was a loud bang. Looking along the tunnel Bouncey saw that a large section of the wall had opened like a door and two strange figures came out.

They were quite small with long thin arms and tiny legs. Their eyes, in big heads, were large with black slits just like a cat.

Each figure was dressed in a dark grey tunic, just like the one Bouncey was wearing. They were pulling a cart
