Nina Dhillon

Nina Dhillon was born in Shimla, a beautiful city in the Himalayan mountains of northern India. She completed her formal education in India with a master’s degree in business management and worked as a marketing executive before coming to the United States in 1992. Nina speaks six languages: English, Hindi, Punjabi, Urdu, and a little French and Spanish. Both of Nina’s daughters are studying to be doctors. Jane, twenty-seven, finished medical school and is currently taking the United States Medical Licensing Examination. Sara, twenty-three, is a medical student and will soon begin clinical rotations, most likely in New York. Both graduated from Granada Hills High School in Los Angeles, California. When Nina arrived in America, she took whatever jobs she could. She worked as a waitress for four years. She also worked at a Subway sandwich shop for six months and then bought the same restaurant in 2000. She earned her real estate license in 1996 and has worked as a real estate broker since then. Nina says, “I have lived in Los Angeles since I arrived in the U.S., and I love it!” Nina loves to play golf and once had an ambition to be a professional golfer. She laments that when it comes to golf, she didn’t follow the advice she gives in this book to “set your goals and pursue them.” She says, “With this book, I’m trying to keep young girls from those kinds of ‘ifs, ands, or buts,’ so that they can pursue their goals and live full and happy lives!

    For

    my two wonderful daughters

    and

to all the daughters of the world

    who gave me the

    inspiration and insight

to write it back to them

    so that they can learn

to live life to its fullest.

    ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

I came to write this book not because I was experiencing something positive, but because I was seeing so much that was negative. When I went to my daughters’ school to pick them up, so many times I saw young girls and boys kissing right in front of their middle school. There were teachers around, but none of them bothered to stop the bad behavior!

I was new to this country and felt I couldn’t say anything to the school authorities for fear that their schoolmates would bully my daughters if they found out who blew the whistle.

That kind of inappropriate behavior is still taking place, but I have now written out my feelings to young people in a way so that they don’t feel singled out.

As I wrote at the beginning of this book — it isn’t written for the girls who want to be COOL and only have FUN. Instead, it’s meant for those girls who want to have a life even better than their parents had. If, for example, a girl’s mom had a baby when she was seventeen, that girl doesn’t have to repeat her mother’s mistake. Isn’t it better to learn from what your mom did wrong?

That’s why I started writing this book.

As I began, I spoke very often to my friend, Annie La Fleur, and then I met another friend, Debbie Jackson, who edited what I wrote and turned this book into something beautiful. Thank you, Annie and Debbie; you are like sisters to me. I would also like to thank Jack Barnard, who coached me into being a better speaker so I can talk freely and easily about this project, and Josh Nixon, who did his amazing artwork for the cover all the way from New Zealand.

I would like to acknowledge the help I received from my daughters, Jane and Sara, who gave me insight about their lives at school that helped me understand them better.

Finally, thank you to all the young girls who will read this book and, I hope, learn something from it. The essence of my message is that when you come across a decision that looks and feels bad, run the other way and do just the opposite! Remember: You have to live with the consequences of whatever choices you make, even if you make those decisions while you’re very young.

I would like to rewind my life and do so many things differently, but I can’t! You, however, can make good decisions to start with. It’s my hope that what you learn from this book will help you to make the very best decisions for your life.

    GLOSSARY

    ABOUT THE AUTHOR

    WHAT IS THIS BOOK ABOUT?

This book is not for girls who want to be cool. It’s not for girls who would like to only enjoy their life before they make their life.

The purpose of this book is to drive you toward your life’s journey in such a way that you don’t have to take the wrong path and then, once you’re already exhausted, end up turning around so you can make the right choices and find the right path.

    Mirrors Reflect Something Special: You!

Why did I choose a girl in a mirror as the main theme of this book?

A mirror shows you as you are now, but if you look closely and dream big, it can also show you your future. What will your future be? Will it be bright? Will you make the right choices? Will you take the right path?

Girl in the Mirror can raise your awareness and help you find your purpose in this life. Girl in the Mirror can help you plant big dreams in your heart. Girl in the Mirror can teach you how to make the right choices, avoid bad choices, and find the right path!

If you go down the wrong path at the beginning, you just might give up. When you go down the wrong path, you might get tired, discouraged, and disappointed with yourself. It’s not so easy to pull yourself back and head the right way when you’re going through life carrying that kind of pain and suffering.

The intent of this book is to teach you, as a young girl, how to prepare yourself for life, how to make your goals, and then how to achieve them. Your most important lesson is to recognize your own role in shaping your own life. And you have to start early — while you’re young.
