The Belt Mines of Sol
Chapter 1
A burst of static sounded just before Hank's voice came through loud and clear. Larry. Good to see that derelict you call a ship again. We all thought you went too far this time. Joe was giving 6 to 1 odds against your return.
I'd say Joe just lost his shares for the next few weeks.
Larry said with a chuckle. Larry's ship was an old Earth to Moon shuttle until his father converted it to an asteroid hauler and used it for years himself before giving it to his son. Larry recently refitted it with the newer sub-light engines recently available. Where's Frankie? Is she back yet?
Hank toggled the Mic again. She said something about missing breakfast and eating her next two days rations. I assume she'll be in the mess hall.
Hank paused for a moment then smiled and added. Why, you look'n for a date?
Funny! Give me an approach vector, I'm getting close.
Hank knew Larry liked Frankie since the three of them were in college together but Larry was to shy too to do anything about it. Come in on 2.113 by 3.211 on my mark.
A short pause and... 3, 2, 1, mark
. Hank then noticed on the monitor ''Your bigger than usual, aren't you pushing your limits a bit."
Just a bit. I will need at least 3 pushers though.
Larry paused just long enough to decide to continue. Hank, I found something. Meet me in the mess hall, and hold Frankie till I get there.
Dock at port 12 after you release your rock to the pushers. I'll see you in a few.
Larry continued on course until he saw the pushers coming to meet him. He slowed to a crawl, released the asteroid and moved off. The pushers moved into place, each clamping on to the huge asteroid. Although very small the asteroid pushers are very powerful. They get a slow start, but since they don't have far to go it doesn't take long to get there.
The belt side of mining station is where they slice and dice the giant rocks. It's dark and cold except for the few lights and even fewer windows casting light and an almost warm feeling to those working on that side of the station. Although the station shadows the workers from the warmth and light of the sun it also keeps them safe from the harmful radiation of the larger sun flares.
The station is more a mining town than anything else, a mining town built like an island in space. Several months away from Earth and a week and
