30 Days of Grace for Writers - T.K. Richardson

    Richardson

    A Writer's Blessing

May you always have a story in your heart and a pen in your hand.

May you always have an audience for your words and friends who understand.

May you always have peace of mind and the confidence to continue.

May you always have fresh ideas and the time to write them down.

May your editing be as fruitful as your writing.

And may your stories be a blessing to those who find them.

    ∼T.K. Richardson

    Day 1

I love holidays. Whether it's Thanksgiving, Christmas, birthdays, or the Fourth of July, it's a time to reflect on all the good in life, a time to be with family, and a time to be thankful.

Sometimes, though, it may seem like there is not a lot to be thankful for when it comes to your publishing dreams. Maybe you haven't heard back from that agent, or your manuscript is stuck in yet another edit, or you just can't see where this whole writing thing is going.

It may be hard to see the good while you're waiting.

We all know that writing and publishing consists of more waiting than you first realized. It is hard, I know. But if you're thankful right now in whatever stage you're at, your writing will be better and your life will be that much richer.

Hang on to your dreams and learn to be content no matter what. If you look around you'll find there is plenty to be thankful for right now.

    Day 2

As moms and writers, we carry a lot on our plates. The demands of life, coupled with writing, can be hard to balance. Sometimes it may feel like an internal tug-of-war between writing time and family time. It can lead to WMI: Writer Mom Issues. One WMI that may hit close to home with you is the issue of guilt.

Sometimes I think we are programmed to feel guilty for taking time to write, edit, research, or promote our work. Honestly, it does take a lot of time and that time could be spent doing a host of other activities. It may seem like the guilt gene was dropped in our genetic make up for this very reason - to prevent us from writing.

Nothing is more powerful, or automatic, than that feeling of guilt.

You take a little time away to write and before you know it precious time has flown by. You may think, There went another hour and I only wrote______ (insert low word count here). Once this thought crosses your mind, you find yourself glancing around and wondering why the house fell silent, and wondering where the kids are. Did they wander away? Are they okay? Is anybody hurt?

Your mom gene jumps to panic mode and you set your cold tea down, slide your keyboard back, and check the first place you think they should be. Instead of finding your sweet little ones reading a book or cleaning their rooms, they have lovingly smeared red lipstick on the walls in a very artistic fashion.

You are torn between discipline and admiration…

Finding your sweet child unharmed and in one piece you are relieved, only to realize dinner will be late, again. Or you remember you were cooking something and it is now only fit for the garbage can. You lost track of time and dinner is burned.

Another guilt gene rises to the surface and the WMI is attacking your very core.

This is the life of many Writer Moms. Finding the time to do it all can be difficult, but we don't have to accept Writer Mom Issues or guilt. Finding a balance can be done. Here are a few simple steps to avoid
