3-Minute Devotions for Moms - Compiled by Barbour Staff

    NIV

    Wanting to Be Wanted

God remembered Rachel and answered her pleading and made it possible for her to have children.

    GENESIS 30:22 AMP

Some women are surprised by pregnancy and motherhood, but others take conscious steps in that direction, whether we spend time reading pregnancy books, eliminating caffeine, or making other changes in anticipation of the day that home pregnancy test reads positive. No matter how long we wait for that day, one thing is certain: we all look forward to greeting a little person we can call our own.

There is in fact nothing else that can fill that motherhood void. It’s an important part of a woman’s makeup, intended to motivate us to propagate the human race. It’s deep and sacred, and God-given. It allows us to look far beyond the temporary inconvenience, the aches and pains, the changes to our bodies, and dream big for a child who has not even been born.

God has that same kind of maternal longing for us. He created us, named us, and dreams big dreams for us. He can’t wait to shower us with His love and care. Like a mother, God loves completely, forgives instantly, and wants only the best for us. He looked beyond the pain and suffering of seeing His own Son Jesus dying on the cross in order to bring us eternal life.

We all have days when we feel unwanted or unloved, but God gives us a perfect reminder of how untrue that is. The next time that mind-set strikes, let’s take a few minutes to remember how eager we were to become moms and how much we loved our children before they were even born. Then let’s multiply that desire to a level beyond what we can imagine, and we’ll start to grasp how much God loves and wants us.

Lord, thank You for loving me and wanting me to be Yours. Thank You, too, for fulfilling my desire to be a mom. Help me always find ways to show my children how much they’re loved and wanted. Amen.

    Far-Reaching Dreams

To him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory.

    EPHESIANS 3:20–21 ESV

It’s common for us to dream about our unborn children, working out questions as we sleep. Will this child be a girl or boy? Who will this new little person look like, act like? How will he or she deal with life? Even in our waking moments, we wonder if our child will have a sense of humor, a love of music, or a connection with the outdoors.

Once our babies are born, we continue to dream. Hair and eyes are now known, but as our children begin to develop their distinct personalities and interests, we start to dream for them rather than about them. We imagine the friends they will have. We see them sitting at the piano during recitals and wonder if a professional musician could be in the works. We see a love and compassion for animals and know those characteristics would be important for a veterinarian. We spot dexterity in the kitchen and imagine a head chef in the making.

While we are dreaming for our children, God is dreaming, too. No doubt He was the first to see our potential to be good moms. He also sees the gifts He has placed in us growing and taking shape. But unlike us, God sees all—from the beginning to the end. He knows how to inspire us to keep moving toward His best for us. He sees the obstacles in the path and shows us how to overcome them.

Let’s aim high for our children and dream big dreams for them. But let’s also dare to dream along with God for the fulfillment of our gifts and callings. What could be a better course for our lives than to live as God dreams we will?

Dear Lord, it’s easy for me to get caught up in setting goals and enjoying dreams, but I know You’ve mapped out the ultimate plan—for my children and for me. Thank You for those special plans, whatever they are. Show me how to follow You in that direction. Amen.

    God’s Help Needed

My help comes from the Lord, Who made heaven and earth.

    PSALM 121:2 AMP

As moms, we are eager to help our children in innumerable ways from the day they’re born, but quickly we move from helping to teaching our children so that they can take care of themselves one day. But as we encourage them in that direction, we have an important flip side lesson to teach: the fine line between being self-sufficient and understanding when and how they need to ask for help, especially from God.

The world often tells us that asking for help is wrong or a sign of weakness. As we grow closer to God, however, we know that nothing could be further from the truth. God repeatedly tells us through the Bible to turn to Him for help and let Him help shoulder our burdens.

Some of the most important kings over Israel, such as David and Asa, were men who understood that they could not carry their burdens alone. They asked for God’s help personally and sometimes directed their subjects to ask for God’s help on their behalf because they knew better than to rely on anything else (see Psalm 54 and 106; 2 Chronicles 14:11 and 20:4). No situation was too small to bring before God.

God doesn’t expect us to stumble through life alone—He wants to help us. Although we might not be overseeing kingdoms or making world-changing decisions every day, our situations are always important enough to merit God’s help.

Let’s teach our children that being self-sufficient can take us far, but we’ll only get to a certain point on our own. Knowing that we recognize our need and aren’t ashamed to ask for God’s help can be one of the best lessons we’ll ever model as a mom.

Dear God, I don’t want to be one of those women who gets so caught up in doing things myself that I forget to ask for help, especially from You. Thank You for always being ready to help me or my children whenever we ask. Amen.

    By Any Name

He will be named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.

    ISAIAH 9:6 HCSB

    Mommy. Mama. Mom. Mother.

No matter which name our children choose for us—and even if the name changes during the day, depending on the circumstances—its meaning is the same as the others. Every version of Mom represents the kind of love, safety, and human connection that can only be found between us and our children.

The same is true for our connection with God. He holds many titles and fills many roles for us: creator (see Genesis 1:27), protector (see Psalm 91), teacher (see John 14:26), and guide (see Psalm 119:105), just to name a few. But even if our view of God changes because of our circumstances, God Himself never changes. We can rely on Him to be exactly what we need to get through any situation, no matter how difficult.

God is our comforter and healer when we’re sick, our guide when we aren’t sure which way to turn, and our most enthusiastic cheerleader when we have something to celebrate. He’s the one person in the ever-changing (and ever-challenging) world around us that we can always count on—no matter what name we call Him. It might be Yahweh, Jehovah, Father, or something very personal, but regardless of what name we choose, He is always ready to help us when we call on Him.

Our relationships with our children are broad and complex. Our children are growing and changing day by day. As a parent, we adapt to those changes throughout the years. So it is for us as God’s children. No matter how much we grow and change throughout our lives, He is always able to provide us with anything and everything we might ever need. In the process, He teaches us how to be all our
