    6. CONCLUSION

    INTRODUCTION

This book provides useful information and advice for authors and writers who decide to go down the self-publishing route. It will provide you with a step by step organised guide to self-publishing your book and will help you to avoid mistakes, saving money and time.

This guide does not include a magic wand or every single answer you might need; however, you will find here many practical answers that are not provided in other guides and – most importantly – tips to help you get organised during the decision-making process.

Are you sure you want to self-publish?

"Are you crazy? Self-publishing is a waste of time; it is for losers and authors who failed to find agents or publishers!"

This is what I had to hear when I tried self-publishing, but now I have my books in the hands of many readers, thanks to my persistence.

Self-publishing is not a bed of roses and involves a lot of hours of work and research, being extremely organised, focused and patient. If you don’t have these qualities, perhaps this is not the right path for you.

On top of all that, you will need a budget. Self-publishing does not come for free.

You will have to do all the work publishers do for authors yourself and you will have to learn many new things on the go to avoid mistakes and make your adventure a success. But the benefits of all that hard work are:

–You will have more control over your book.

–You will get the chance to make more profit from your book.

–You will learn many new things about publishing.

The work does not finish when you write the book, after that there is a long process over many months of working hard, getting your book ready according to the publishing standards required, hiring and choosing professionals to help you in achieving that, getting advice, reading and researching, and once your book is online and ready for the readers, you will have to apply your own marketing strategy to increase sales. Hard work! But not impossible.

During your first attempt at self-publishing, you will realise that there are many people and companies trying to get your money and rip you off. They are the publishing sharks, be aware of them and never pay for any service you could do yourself or find much cheaper elsewhere by doing some research.

Where can I self-publish my book?

The self-publishing market is buzzing. Many authors are now taking the self-publishing route rather than approaching publishers or agents. Several companies are already offering a very professional service for self-publishing; the bigger ones are:

Bubok.com – Very easy to use, language friendly with website menus in English, Spanish, Portuguese and French. You can publish your book as an e-book or a paperback with them. The submission of books is free and they have good customer service and a phone support line.

CreateSpace.com – This company is linked to Amazon and gives you the chance to publish your e-book on Kindle and also as a print on demand (POD) paperback. No publishing fee is required, but they charge a percentage per book sold. No phone support line.

Smashwords.com – This company will publish your e-book edition only, but they distribute to the most important companies: Apple iBookstore, Barnes & Noble, Sony Reader Store, Kobo, the Diesel E-book Store, Baker & Taylor's Blio and Axis360, etc. No publishing
