K C Murdarasi is a writer from Glasgow, Scotland. She is a graduate of the University of St Andrews, where she gained a first in Ancient History. Since then she has been a perplexed missionary, a bored secretary and a harried nanny. She has been writing professionally since 2007. Her first novel, Leda, was published in February 2012. Since then she has written two books for the Christian Focus Trailblazers series for young people, Augustine: The Truth Seeker and Patrick: The Boy Who Forgave. She currently lives in one of the coolest neighbourhoods in Glasgow with a budgie and a collection of dying houseplants.

    That dayless week between Christmas and New Year

    When it's all over and it hasn't started.

    Finding space for new presents and new life,

    Three leaving the stable that two had entered.

    A pause, a plateau, an intake of breath,

    Ready for the wheel to turn again.

    Weebles Wobble but They Don't Fall Down

    'So this is really it,' said Allie, as Pete lifted the last of Miriam's huge suitcases into the car boot. Miriam pushed the hair out of her eyes. 'I suppose it is. Come here, you two!' She squeezed her ex-flatmates tight one after the other.

    'I'll leave you ladies to finish your goodbyes,' said Pete, excusing himself. 'You know I can't stand the sight of blubbing.' He let himself back into the apartment block.

    'I'll miss you, you know!' Allie protested when he was gone. 'How can you go to London and leave me alone with Pete?'

    'You'll be fine,' said Miriam. 'Half the time you only pretend to find him annoying. You're like a brother and sister!' They laughed, and then Miriam was in the car, driving away, and Allie was climbing the stairs back up to her empty flat. Empty but for Pete.

    Once, when she was still a student, the four-bedroom flat had been full, and more than full during their many parties. Residents had come and gone, new names had been added to and removed from the rental agreement, but Allie had been there since the beginning. So had Pete, almost. He had been the boyfriend of one of Allie's flatmates in her first year, but after their amicable break-up he had somehow ended up staying. Now university was starting to feel like a long time ago, and first Christina, and now Miriam, had accepted job offers and moved away. Allie and Miriam had been close for what felt like a lifetime. Now Allie wondered if it was time
