About this ebook

“A Sabbath Day” is for all time and all people. Everybody should have “his or her Sabbath Day” to enhance godliness and productivity.
By a “Sabbath Day”, I mean a day an individual or group of people anywhere sets aside as a day of rest and total devotion to God. This day may vary from one place to another because of different public holidays in various nations and prevailing circumstances. For example, if one lives in the country where Saturdays and Sundays are not holidays but Fridays, one will have to use Friday as one’s Sabbath. Special anniversaries can also be set apart as Sabbaths. Some seasons of the year may be observed as Sabbaths in which we don’t work but commit ourselves to fasting and prayer and strengthening our family ties.
The aim of this book is to bring believers to “A LIBERATED OBSERVANCE OF A SABBATH DAY” that will strengthen their relationship with God and sustain their spiritual and physical state of wholeness. Believers today hate God’s commandments since they compel them to discipline themselves. They love to say “where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty” and abuse their freedom in Christ. The Sabbath Day liberates believers instead of bringing them under bondage.

    About the Author

    INTRODUCTION

I did not understand the importance of observing the Sabbath Day until I received a prophetic impression in my heart. In a brief encounter with the Lord, He told me to tell His people to give Him His Sabbath Day and He will give them their rest. The Sabbath Day belongs to the LORD. If we fail to give it to Him, we lose our rest and peace. It is an exchange process – we give God the Sabbath Day and He gives us our peace.

Apart from the spiritual experience I cited above, a physical occurrence in Israel opened my eyes to the importance of the Sabbath Day. I observed the seriousness the Jews attach to the Sabbath Day when I visited the nation for the first time. At the hotel my team and I lodged, two elevators were made available for the hotel guests on the Sabbath Day – one for foreign guests and the other for the Jews. The reason for the differentiation was that the elevator reserved for the Jews was programmed to automatically stop on every floor, without the person in it having to press the button of the floor number. They regarded pressing the buttons as working on the Sabbath Day. The elevator for the foreigners could however stop on any floor we chose to stop at because we were not required to observe the Sabbath Day.

It is a well-known fact that the Jews live healthy lives and are productive because of their obedience to the Law of the Sabbath Day. Their adherence to the Sabbath Day is seen in their commitment to simple things like not pressing the button of the lift as I mentioned early on.

A Sabbath is a period of rest and cessation from labour. It may look like a counter productive time in one’s life but in actual fact, it empowers one to live and perform better. The Sabbath is a waiting period – not a wasting period – in which we renew our strength. Those who don’t observe it get weary and faint.

Isaiah the prophet underscored the effect of waiting upon the LORD. He said they that wait upon the LORD renew their strength. The Sabbath is a perfect opportunity to wait upon the LORD. It is a time when we focus one hundred per cent on the LORD and our spiritual well- being.

30 Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall:

31 But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

    Isaiah 40:30-31

To observe or not to observe the Sabbath is a subject of confusion in the minds of believers in Christ. Many of us think because we are in Christ, we are not subject to the Sabbath Day. Since we see observing the day as part of the Mosaic Law, we believe that it is not a requirement for our faith in the new life in Christ Jesus. It is not edifying to regard keeping the Sabbath Day as a demand of the Mosaic Law.

A Sabbath Day is for all time and all
