    THE THING UP THERE

    THE leaves descend one after the other closely, with negligible distance between them. They pirouette and somersault, performing multiple mid-air flips in as many random directions as a butterfly can’t do without before meeting the dead foliation carpeting the ground in silent, mirthless flourishes. These leaves have jaundiced from weeks of inadequate sunlight; their pigments have suffered from malnutrition; their branches are desiccating stalks, breaking handlers. Minimal effort will be required to snap them from the mother-wood, the great Oak. Why was the mother doing this? Why had she abandoned these harmless ones to crumble to their death at her feet, while protecting and providing for the malign entity, the evil child she sheltered and nurtured within her cumulonimbus-like bosom of despondent green? One that had, before recent revealing events, had appeared to be a majestic, rich verdure, a fine shade from the scorching sun of summer.

    Looks deceived. This is no shade; it’s an altar for sacrifice, a serving plate for the tree’s malevolent inhabitant.

    The Oak was the only speck of green you discovered when you moved into the compound uninhabited for a long time back (nobody can remember when, but then, the neighbors had exhibited cryptic, suspicious countenances, and a collusive togetherness). Everything around, grass and weed was dead or dying, wilting. The lawn’s landscape was a sorry, sickly yellow but you hadn’t considered it uncommon, just unsightly; and you’d promised to do something about it.

    Well, now, you know you REALLY have to do something about it.

    You stand on the altar, the brittle, yellowed leaves cracking ceaselessly beneath you, telling you of their doomed fates.

    A tide of emotion nearly sweeps your soles off the ground, nearly makes you collapse on weak knees. You utter a
