WELCOME TO A MAGICAL PLACE BEYOND THE WOODS
From the Publisher that brought you popular short story series Song of Teeth, Children of Time, Chains of Darkness, The Splicers, The Night Sculptor, Blood Waters, Requiem for a Dream, Soulyte, and The Taken. And now, here's Tales from the Pixie Kettle and Hearth series...
Ashlynn Qardmare is a young woman who backpacks to Europe to deal with her recent break up from her live in partner for five years. She finds herself somewhere in England after two months, short of money, wet from the constant drizzle of rain, and looking for a cheap place to stay.
An old gnome (but she doesn’t know this yet) points her to the direction of a bed and breakfast located in the woods. After more than an hour of walking, she finally arrives at Pixie Kettle and Hearth, a small yet comfortable inn, where she encounters weird characters -- from a white stag who doesn’t seem to be afraid of strangers, to Iris the front desk person, to the babbler guest The Ferret Guy (‘cause he acts so nervous all the time), to the motherly Madge who runs the place.
After that, everything turns more than strange. It is, to the hungry and disillusioned Ashlynn, actually interesting. Turns out that The Ferret Guy Trevor is a shapeshifter who actually turns into a ferret, and Madge is a witch, Iris is a Pixie, and... well, she still has to learn about the white stag.
So, do you think she’ll run away screaming? Or will she stay?

EXCERPT
SHE signed the book. With the final stroke of the quill, a bright blue light flared from the page with an intensity that she could not think up an excuse for.
“Just as I thought,” Madge said. “You have some magic in you.”
“What?” Ashlynn asked, this time dropping the quill.
“I didn’t think Angus would send anyone here without a lick of magic in them. Nice to know the old gnome hasn’t lost his touch.”
“Gnome?” Ashlynn asked in a still shocked tone.
“Yes, dear. One of the more urban of his kind, but he’s a gnome. But I do wonder what you are. From the way you’re reacting I would say you’re not aware yourself.”
“Maybe she’s a shifter like me,” Trevor added as he smiled at Ashlynn. “I turn into a ferret.”
Ashlynn just stood there to take this all in a moment before she went to find a chair.

Chapter One
EUROPE WAS NOT exactly what American television had made it out to be. Ashlynn had known that before she put on her favorite navy blue jacket and started her backpacking tour through Europe.
Not that she was expecting small cobblestoned towns and picture perfect sceneries, but still, the United Kingdom was far from what she had anticipated.
There were a lot of things people didn't tell you about backpacking through Europe. One of which was that the plan of earning money by doing odd jobs for the people you meet along the way won't quite work out. It may have been because Ashlynn was a stranger, which was an understandable worry -- ax murderers came in many forms, after all.
But whatever the excuse, it was clear that her trip was going to have to end very soon. Three hundred wasn't going to last her much longer, even with shopping at cheaper stores and buying only junk food. Everything else in her bank account after that three hundred was for her trip back to Illinois.
She calculated that she would be out of useable funds in about a week, unless some sort of unexpected boon happened soon, but that was highly doubtful.
It was okay, though. She had already proven to herself what she needed to. Pete would never have thought she would last a week on this adventure, yet she surprised everyone by having been gone two months so far.
One of her ex-boyfriend's many flaws was his lack of belief in her ability to get by on her own. Far too often, he questioned her abilities and pointed out her flaws. His actions spoke volumes, as well-meaning as they were. Occasionally holding the door or helping her out of the car was charming, but ordering her food for her without asking what she wanted and making comments on her choices were not.
It wasn't that he was a bad man, but he could be condescending enough that eventually-no, after five years even-Ashlynn couldn't take it anymore. No one could say she did not love him.
So finally, the break up came, and it had seemed like the best option after that.
Pete agreed. It was a fairly clean and drama-free breaking up, as far as that goes. If there was one good thing Ashlynn could be thankful about her ex-boyfriend, it was that he was not a vindictive man. They hadn't fought over anything material. She even let him stay in the house when she decided to start this backpacking tour. He could stay while she would be away for months.
In fact, she was planning on selling it to him, and she could just start over and get a new place to stay when she got back to the States. It wasn't practical staying there when her work was too far away. She only stayed because they were together.
Trying to get thoughts of the break up off her mind, she focused on looking for directions. Her search brought her to a book shop. The owner was a short middle-aged man, his brown hair having a slight touch of white peppered in. Something about that and the sleepy look in his brown eyes was almost calming.
Excuse me. Sorry for being a bother, but I need some advice on a good hotel,
Ashlynn said.
The owner took one look at her and asked, Been walking in the rain, I take it,
the man said. Most people bring an umbrella with them.
There was another thing Ashlynn realized that no one had thought of telling her about the United Kingdom
