    ‘Bye bye Brownie!’

    ‘See you later Septic!’

The calls and taunts echoed around her as Sepia Newman cycled angrily home. She threw her bike down on the grass inside the gate and stamped her feet all the way inside to the studio.

‘It’s not fair,’ she wailed to her mother, ducking to avoid a splash of paint as it flew through the air. ‘Why did you have to call me Sepia?’

Her mother paused for a moment, paintbrush in hand. She tilted her head sideways to squint at the large canvas in front of her then proceeded to plaster large blobs of paint in one corner.

‘No, I don’t think it needs any yellow tints,’ she said finally. ‘But I might add a little crimson.’

Sepia sighed and wandered off to the kitchen. She should have known better than to try and talk to her mother when she was in one of her artistic moods. Unfortunately, Mrs Newman’s moods could strike at any moment, which made life rather uncomfortable for her large family.

‘I wish I was someone else,’ Sepia grumbled as she scuffed her shoes along the hallway. ‘I’d happily swap places with just about everyone else I know. I hate being me.’

She walked into the kitchen and stopped short as she saw her eldest sister peeling a large mound of potatoes.

‘Oh! Are you cooking dinner again, Emerald?’

Emerald shrugged. ‘Someone has to. Lavender is taking Hue for a walk to the park in his stroller and we’ll never eat if I don’t do something.’

Sepia heaved another sigh and made herself a peanut butter sandwich.

‘I hate having a mother who’s an artist. I wish she’d been an ordinary mother, the sort that everyone else has. Don’t you wish we’d never been named after colours?’ she complained.

‘Oh, I don’t mind,’ said Emerald absently, as she sliced meat into cubes and tossed them into a casserole dish. ‘It could have been worse. She might have chosen famous painters and I couldn’t have gone through life with a name like Da Vinci or Monet.’

‘I think our names are cool,’ put in Indigo, as she swept into the kitchen with a twirl. Indigo was always dancing. Sepia thought that probably meant that Indigo’s father had been a dancer but no one would ever know this for sure. Adriana Newman moved through life haphazardly, with a succession of boyfriends who had produced her eight children.

‘Indigo Newman is going to be a really great name one day, when I’m famous.’

Sepia glowered. It was all right for Indigo. Her name suited her. Dark, mysterious and exotic, she danced through life with a charm of her own. The twins, Carmine and Scarlet, were complete opposites. Solid and sandy-haired, they had more docile temperaments. The twins chattered happily together as they sorted though the heap of clothes in the corner of the laundry, separating the clean things from those that needed washing.

    ‘I hate being called Sepia.’

‘Oh, do stop moaning,’ Scarlet called out. ‘You should be glad to have an unusual name. There are five Emily’s in our class.’

‘I wouldn’t mind being an Emily,’ muttered Sepia. ‘At least I wouldn’t be teased over it.’

‘And you’ve got a father,’ added Carmine. ‘The rest of us don’t even know who our fathers are. Tom is really nice.’

‘It’s not like having a proper father all to myself,’ grumbled Sepia. ‘Tom is married now and he’s got Amy and Lisa.’
