    Chapter 1

    UGLY DAUGHTER

My daughter is a plain stout mushroom, which is kind of strange because both my husband and I come from families of tall, slim people with straight posture. She’s not particularly good at anything and not very interested in anything, which is also strange – where is her fire to do things and create something and take action?

A boyfriend came into the picture, which was also a little strange because he was handsome and well-built and nice, some hockey player or something. I immediately knew he thought our family was wealthy and I thought God what will this all lead to now, I must protect my daughter or her heart will break into fifty million pieces. I told the boy pretty straight-out that we’re not rich even if it might seem like that – I have my boutique and it’s quite popular, yes, but even so it’s a small entrepreneur’s income I rake in, and my husband makes good money but not outrageous amounts. The boy didn’t understand at all what I was talking about, or rather why I was talking about all this. But people are really good at acting as if they don’t understand what someone means even when everyone knows exactly how things are. I told my daughter you’ll have to be careful and keep all the guys at arm’s length until you can be sure they really genuinely care about you. She also didn’t understand what I was talking about – well, she’s only sixteen, what could she understand? – and a little later they went to the movies together, holding hands like true lovers.

When the affair ended, it was a relief, but the astonishing thing was that it was my daughter who dumped him. And almost immediately she had a new boyfriend, some aspiring poet, also quite good looking in a weaselly kind of way, and they sat in her room and listened to music and talked and laughed. I went closer to the door to hear what they talked about and I thought he’s probably tacky and romantic – but no, they talked about how it might be possible to move faster than light and the effects of that, which was unbelievable because like I said my daughter is not very bright and has never been that interested in anything.

I don’t know how to explain to her that nearly every relationship is a mistake.

    Chapter 2

THE STREETS I CAN’T WALK ANYMORE

I can’t walk along Lisa Street because there’s a café where we kissed for the first time and were incredibly romantic.

At the end of Mechelin Street near the hospital
