Full of unnecessary info. Almost no info on what to eat and what not to eat. Diet part was not discussed properly and focused more on history of gout and other unimportant things

Chapter 1 - Introduction to Gout

Gout is famous. Throughout the annals of history, gout features prominently in literature and art. Gout has the infamous reputation as being a disease that primarily affects wealthy, well-born people. In fact, in literature and ancient medical texts, gout is known as a rich man’s affliction.

King Henry VIII remains, perhaps, the most famous person to reportedly be affected by gout, and his penchant for indulgence is well documented. Gout causes inflammatory arthritis of the joints and while treatable, the incidence of gout is on the rise in the US and other developed countries.

Typically affecting the joint of the great toe, gout is caused by a build up of uric acid in the blood, which can occur when the body is in a disease state, and more commonly when the diet is rich in a specific amino acid called purine. While some people benefit from changes in diet as a means to control their gout symptoms, the disease can be debilitating.

Because gout is easily treated, some assume that it is not prevalent or a cause for concern, but this is not true. Not only do gout cases occur in 1% to 2% of the population, it can be indicative of deeper health issues in those affected by gout. Additionally, the quality of life is compromised in the person living with gout.
