    The Bathroom Ghost

The Plantain family had a ghost in their bathroom.

It took them some time to discover this. They had moved to the town of Herberton when his company transferred Mr Plantain, and it had not taken them long to buy the house at 17 Pukeko Street. It was a very comfortable house with a cheerful red roof and a shiny green front door. There were climbing roses over the fence at the front and a large backyard, which was perfect for kicking a ball or having a game of cricket. The house agents were offering it very cheaply – so cheaply in fact that Mrs Plantain was sure there must be a catch. But as the roof didn’t leak and the drains didn’t smell, Mr and Mrs Plantain happily bought it and moved in with their three children and all their belongings.

The first few weeks were the usual muddle of finding what day the rubbish men came to collect the bin, which shop sold the freshest bread, and the biggest ice creams, and settling young Peter Plantain into kindergarten and Rosy and Daniel into their new school.

Peter was a lot happier about the move than Rosy and Daniel were. Being only three, he was happy wherever he was, as long as he was assured of bananas for breakfast and could carry around his rather lopsided teddy bear, Wonkle.

Rosy and Daniel had more important matters to worry about, particularly in making a good impression at their new school. They knew from past experience, (the Plantains had moved rather a lot), how much it mattered to fit into their new classes and lose the ‘new’ label which made people point and giggle. They hated losing their way to the school office and the swimming pool and despised being given ‘friends’ to help them in their first few days. Even though they were in different classes Rosy and Daniel met up at playtimes and lunchtimes to compare notes and present a front of family solidarity. The last thing either of them wanted was to be labelled ‘different,’ or ‘peculiar,’ so when they discovered the ghost they were most put out.

Mr Plantain was the first to see the ghost. He was standing in the bathroom one morning shaving in front of the mirror when a ghostly face peered over his shoulder, causing him to shriek and drop his electric razor into the hand basin where it fizzed and died. Mr Plantain was bewildered to see no one in sight when he turned around, but when he looked back in the mirror a damp face with misty hair was watching him mournfully. Firmly shutting the door behind him he muttered, ‘must be overworking,’ and started on his long neglected exercise regime. Since this involved jogging to work where he was able to shower and change in the company washroom he decided he wouldn’t use the bathroom at home at all.

He was sure there was no point in worrying his family so he didn’t mention the ghost but got round the loss of his shaver by deciding to grow a beard and moustache.

Mrs Plantain was surprised at her husband’s behaviour but was too busy sewing new curtains for the house and joining the PTA committee to worry too much about it. She was also rather surprised at the amount of time young Peter spent in the bath. Peter had no trouble accepting the ghost as yet another new thing in a new place and found him very useful. The ghost would obligingly lift down an assortment of interesting bottles for Peter to add to his bath water. They discovered that some of Mrs Plantain’s cosmetics made beautiful finger paintings on the windows and floor and that hair dye mixed with shampoo could produce exciting multi-coloured bubbles when added in large quantities to the bath water.

Mrs Plantain felt a distinct chill in the air whenever she used the bathroom and it made
