About this ebook

A visit from a distressed Mr James Carlisle Scott, a stage magician, begins a case triggered by the disappearance on stage of his assistant. It is a case that will draw Holmes and Watson into the world of international intrigue where state secrets are bartered. A Prussian diplomat working as an aide to the Kaiser is enraged by Holmes's activities at the theatre where he is appearing as a classical pianist. However, a stormy encounter between the pair inadvertently saves Holmes from certain death. Mycroft is at odds with his brother after a secret deal, struck by the British Government, is discovered by Holmes. The involvement of an old foe threatens to tear Sherlock and Mycroft apart. It is only Holmes's unique skills of observation and deduction coupled with swift, yet comedic, action that can perhaps halt a very public assassination. If the assassin succeeds, there may well be war in Europe.

    The Highgate Magician

    By Dick Gillman

Chapter 1 – ‘The Great Borodino’

It was a pleasant afternoon at the beginning of June 1897 when Holmes and I first became acquainted with Mr James Carlisle Scott. A gentleman who was to be the catalyst for the case I have here recorded as that of ‘The Highgate Magician’.

Holmes and I had just enjoyed a rather splendid cup of Darjeeling and were reaching for our pipes when Holmes edged forwards in his leather armchair, his head slightly to one side and was seen to be straining to hear something in the street below.

What is it Holmes? I enquired.

Holmes stood and pulled aside the net curtain to gain a better view of Baker Street and more particularly, the approach to the front door of 221b. He raised an eyebrow and his face bore a wry smile. Ha! Here is a fellow with some purpose, Watson.

I stood and moved to the window. In the street below could be seen a rather rotund figure berating all about him and pushing his way through the throng of inhabitants of our metropolis who were going about their business. Apparently, in doing so, these poor souls were impeding this gentleman’s progress to our door.

It seems, Watson, that we are to have a visitor and one that is in exceedingly great haste to consult us.

At that moment, our doorbell was rung in a manner which I can only assume reflected the urgency of this gentleman’s desire to seek us out. No sooner had the ringing ceased and the door had been answered than there could be plainly heard the thunder of feet upon the stairs as our visitor ascended. This was followed by clatter of much lighter steps as Mrs Hudson followed in hot pursuit.

Within moments our sitting room door flew open and in burst a figure, clearly dishevelled and exhausted by his endeavours. Almost immediately the most disgruntled figure of Mrs Hudson was framed in the doorway.

Mrs Hudson’s face was puce with both anger and exertion. I’m sorry Mr Holmes, this ‘gentleman’ forced his way past me and ran up the stairs. Shall I call a constable?

Holmes ran his expert eye over the figure of our visitor who was now standing, panting and supporting himself on the back of one of our dining chairs.

No, no... that will not be necessary, Mrs Hudson, I do not think we are in any danger…either real or imagined.

At this, I saw the expression on the man’s face change to one of surprise. It was for a moment as if Holmes had said something that had resonated with our guest in an unexpected way.

Mrs Hudson gave our visitor a hard stare, saying, Very well, sir. She straightened and smoothed her apron with both
