About the Author
Introduction
After the Constitutional Convention, a bystander asked Benjamin Franklin, What hath you wrought?
He replied, A Republic, if you can keep it.
America’s form of government is not a Democracy, where all of the people vote on every law, something my father described as tyranny of the masses. Nor is it a Republic where politicians vote on all laws, on behalf of the people. Nor is it a Democratic-Republic, which is some combination of the two. America’s government is A Republic if you can keep it
.
In order to function, citizens must remain very active in the passage and rejection of every law, regardless of whether a law is voted on by the people or by politicians. The health of this nation is directly related to the involvement of ordinary folk.
Think about the concept of separation of powers
used in framing the US Constitution. Checks and balances are a great idea. But, political parties tend to have little accountability within themselves. So, it might be a good idea to have separation of powers
applied, not only to the government, but to a political party itself. You may see this theme throughout the book.
I wrote this at the request of a friend. As he interacts with an ever growing number of politically-inclined young people, the People’s Party has often come up as my solution to America’s problems.
One day he said, Just write an article so I can have something to present.
Here it is.
This not a complete road map for a political party in the United States. The very concept of the People’s Party is that it needs to be from the people.
Laws must be written and reviewed by society at large, not crafted by an elite few behind closed doors that invite backroom deals. So it is with political parties, which affect those laws. The people must be involved from the ground up. Anything else is elitism.
There was, at one time, a People’s Party in America. It won a few elections and served to address the neglected needs of its day. After this purpose, the party drifted into the history books. Perhaps it’s time to revive the People’s Party on a larger scale, a little different this time, and, in doing so, revive our nation.
This booklet is about a party of the people. It outlines how we may come together to make it happen, but, if the people so determine, any and all of these ideas can be changed. In this, truly, lies the essence that can make a party of, by, and for the people.
The Need for Rules & Constitutions
It used to go without mention, but American society has crumbled to a point where the obvious isn’t obvious anymore. Rules are
