The Lost Starship
()
About this ebook
This book is not really part of the Daisy Weal series, but it does take place in, what can only be described as, the Daisy Weal universe.
Two hundred years had passed, and the flagship of the Star Fleet, HMSS ‘The Daisy Weal’ was heading towards Cren to deliver an archaeological and survey team.
An accident happened. A beam of energy from an unknown source penetrated the ship killing all passengers and crew instantly.
The ship took evasive action and escaping on emergency thrust it inadvertently twisted space and performed an unintended, and previously impossible, hyper jump.
Completely lost, he finds that his bio processor has been programmed with an overpowering urge to find a way home
This is the story of that journey home and of the many civilisations that he encounters, of the changes that are made to him, of the friends that he meets, and of the life that it is given.

About the Author
Author’s Note
All readers should note, that this book is deliberately written to be something light, humorous and a little odd. My sons think I am weird anyway, so it seemed an appropriate thing to do.
So here it is and I dedicate it to them in the hope that they will, at least, buy a copy.

Finally, I am British, and I make no apology for portraying the United Kingdom as ‘the best thing since sliced bread’. I am sure that the Patriotic amongst you, from whatever country, will understand and substitute your own country name as appropriate. Maybe such a scenario, as the one which I have invented here, will never happen, but you never know.

Prologue
It was the year 2212, and some six thousand years ago Cren had boasted a thriving and prosperous society, until a genetic shift introduced by an evil alien entity called the Vana, caused Crenian society to degenerate catastrophically with murderous consequences.
In less than six thousand years, its society had collapsed and died out, leaving behind a single Crenian of extraordinary power derived from the Vana itself. Having consumed everything that was edible and available, the Crenian sent his thoughts out into the universe in a desperate search for food. The thoughts of a single individual flared like a beacon, and eagerly he followed them to Earth, using a type of teleportation. As soon as he arrived he encountered the source of those thoughts, in the form of Daisy Weal, the one person who had powers at least equal to his own.
There was a brief period of hostility between them, but with the help of other supernatural entities, Daisy managed to reverse his genetic shift, and they joined forces to finally confront and defeat the Vana. Individually, their powers were so great that they could move between dimensions, across the universe, and were able to travel the time lines as well, but acting together, their powers were incalculable. Later he fell in love with an Earth girl, and married her on the same day that his human equivalent married the man that she had been in love with ever since she was twelve.
A couple of centuries had now passed, and their descendants had lost a great many of these abilities due to interbreeding with normal people. A few of them still had amazing powers, and some were even able to move inter-dimensionally across limited spaces on Earth. Most of the rest were able to use basic teleportation and it was possible to tell those by a loud ‘pop’ whenever they disappeared. It was usually accompanied by a sharp gust of wind that occurred as air filled the space that they had occupied a micro second before.
Most scientists had agreed that the basic telepathic and teleporting genes were dominant, and it was entirely possible that those abilities would probably never die out, but it was accepted that most of the others had probably already gone.
Twilnhump, which was the Crenian’s original name, had taken the name George Weal Jr. after Daisy’s father, and still lived on Earth, though he was beginning to look his age at two hundred and twenty. The medical profession were surprised at how old he was, and insisted on a yearly check up. Privately they considered that he would not live much past two hundred and fifty, but decided not to tell him. Pointless really as he was telepathic, so he knew anyway.
Daisy Weal had suddenly disappeared in the year 2036 and speculation was rife, until she was finally declared to be dead when no trace of her was ever found. None of her family, especially her twin daughters, would ever reveal her whereabouts and such knowledge that they did have soon died with them. Because of the many ways in which she had helped the human race, her old house was preserved and a Statue of her and her dog Bruce was erected on the front lawn. When the road surface in Trendal Place, which was the street where she lived, was upgraded, the square containing the essence of the assassin who had attempted to murder Daisy, but only managed to leave Amy, her companion and friend, severely injured, was left untouched and preserved.

It had been discovered, that nothing could be brought back from the past, only things that you took with you, so George Weal Jr made many trips down Cren’s timeline, taking a video camera with him. It was fortunate for the human race, that the majority of scientific advances that the Crenians had made were recorded and brought back by him before age impaired his ability to travel into the past. It was the analysis of this information that had led to the breakthrough in the search for faster than light travel, and so Her Majesty Queen Charlotte the first’s Royal Starfleet had at last got some real star ships to replace its archaic gravity powered moon shuttles.
The first, faster than light, ship was sent to Proxima Centaurii but it was gone so long that it was presumed to be lost. Some eight years later however, it returned with the crew believing that they had only been gone for a couple of months. It was with some dismay that experts realised that Einstein was right and the time dilation effect in faster than light travel was real and would be a serious problem.
The problem occupied Earth’s greatest minds for many years, but none of them could see whether it would ever be resolved, so for a while FTL travel was abandoned. But then a very clever young man called Maurice Taylor, was tinkering with bits and pieces about two days before his eighteenth birthday, and stumbled upon a solution. None of the experts, with their virtually unlimited resources could accept the fact that a teenager, on pocket money, had succeeded where they had failed.
In the end, it took a single entrepreneur with vision to step in, and the first ship that incorporated the Taylor solution was finally produced and named for the most famous person in English history. It settled down gently on Gravity drive, in the once named Trafalgar square, next to the pair of massive statutes of Earth’s greatest children that now replaced Nelson at its centre.
A ceremony was held which, as tradition would have it, consisted of speeches, bands playing and a bottle of champagne being broken across its bow. Then, the newly named, Her Majesty’s Star ship ‘The Daisy Weal’ lifted off silently from ‘Saviours Square’ and disappeared out into space on its maiden voyage. Ever since that day, all flagships of the star fleet have borne the same name.

It had been more than a Century since the United States of America had collapsed into civil war. It had been vicious and pointless. Friend fought friend and neighbour fought neighbour and the institutions of a once great nation had collapsed into chaos. In the first six months, ten percent of the population perished and still it raged on, with no sign of sanity surfacing anywhere.
The United Kingdom stood back as long as it was able, but when insane mobs had stormed the United Nations offices in New York, she could stand back no longer. A warning was issued, was ignored and eventually the loss of life became so severe that no one with an ounce of humanity could allow it to continue. So she stepped in, using scientific advances that had been brought back down the times lines from the Cren, and brought the conflict to an end.
The United States or rather what remained of it, relinquished its sovereignty and accepted the Queen as head of state and became the first protectorate of the United Kingdom in modern times. Most of its citizens were secretly relieved and delighted as they rapidly became prosperous again. Besides which, we all know that Americans love royalty anyway.
The Russian economy had long since ceased to be anything worth preserving, and starvation and criminal activity had increased exponentially. The government realised that they were losing control, with no prospect of recovery so they petitioned the United Kingdom for negotiations as a prelude to protectorate status. The United Kingdom was having none of it and simply told the Russian Federation join or don’t join, it’s up to you,
so they held a referendum and joined shortly afterwards.
Before you start to read, I have to make it clear that this book was deliberately written to be light, humorous and just a little odd. It is more a parody of science fiction rather than something serious. Nevertheless, if you have a sense of humour you might just find it to be fun.
Chapter One
Perro
The little Star ship sped outwards towards the star Crenna which was situated in a galaxy three north and one northwest of our own. The ship was ambling along at some very high multiples of the speed of light, with its destination being the planet Cren where its passengers were intended to relieve the existing archaeological and survey teams.
There were far too many bits and pieces, in the form of planets, moons, and asteroids, hanging about within a Galaxy for it to use anywhere near its maximum speed. But when it left a galaxy and was in the void between them, no such limit existed and it would begin to rack up some really serious speed.
It had just passed out of the second Galaxy north, and was moving into the outer fringes of Galaxy three north when a brilliant flash of...something...speared through its cabin. All human life on board was extinguished at that instant, and the little ship’s bio computer took over.
"Whoops," the computer thought, well not really ‘thought’ but
