    Chapter 1

    Who am I

I was frightened and afraid, so I ran! I did not know where I was going but I knew that I had to get away fast! The sun was setting with an ominous display of colors as it began to set. The air was still warm just as a slight delta breeze started to flow. You see it felt like I had been running my whole life…even though it had only been for most of just that morning and now I was confused and lost. So there I sat hungry and thirsty as well as covered in dirt on the water’s edge and there I wept bitterly.

Oh how did I get myself into this mess I cried out loud? What can I do, where can I go…I am all alone unable to think!

I could only shake my head in confusion as the light breeze blowing off the swift waters of the Delta Mendota Canal seemed to get colder as the sun started to set.

And what about Skyler, oh my God I forgot all about Skyler, they must have gotten him…I’m sure they did or was it possible that he got away as well?

I felt lost and all alone, (looking up at the heavens above as the tears started to flow) how could I have left Skyler to fend for himself, he must be terrified like me! With my hands holding my head I shook it as I cried WHY, WHY?"

After a while of just sitting there watching the water flow by I started to calm down, but this feeling of desperation still overwhelmed me so. As I looked over the edge of the canal I gazed long and hard into the deep dark and fast running murky waters. After a while I stood, and then picking up some well chosen stones, I skipped them across the top of the water finally ricocheting off the wall on the other side.

It had rained lightly earlier that morning refreshing the ground and everything else, in fact as I remember, it was one of those brisk midsummer showers that cleans and refreshes the air leaving behind that clean invigorating smell of new life. But by now all traces of that shower had disappeared leaving the ground cover of gravel rocks, warm and dry, however loose underfoot.

Yet as I slipped and fell into the water it was frigid to the touch and the rapid flowing current of The Delta Mendota Canal was very strong to say the least…before I realized what was happening I was sucked under! It felt like something ungodly had grabbed and pulled me under that cold and swift tumultuous current! I rolled over and over under the dark, fast and angry current as it sucked me down lower and lower into its depths. It kind of felt almost like I was being swallowed alive…whole! Yes I was tossed about beneath the water rolling over and over like a tumble weed blown in the wind.

Not knowing which way was up I felt myself being pulled down once again as I fought back franticly! Clenching my teeth tightly as I held my breath to avoid breathing in that death dealing water! I could already
