Acknowledgments
For many years I have been asked, encouraged and yelled at to tell my story. Now is the time. I wrote this book from my heart. I wrote it to let you know that if you really want to achieve something, it is possible. I have always surrounded myself with great people; people better than me. Never in life do we need to go it alone. If I ever end up back in a classroom, I will never give an individual test. Life is a group effort. There are many people in my life that I need to thank for making my life wonderful.
John and Barb Schulz: Thank you for the values that shaped who I am today.
Colleen Schulz: Thank you for your understanding when my dreams often butted heads with reality. You have kept me grounded but have allowed me to fly. I love you.
Megan, Emily and Mike: Thank you for putting up with me. But it’s all been worth it right? I am so proud of you. You have unlimited potential and you prove it every day. I love you.
Jenn Kiely: You were the true inspiration to get this ball rolling. Thank you for encouraging me throughout this project.
Pat Hintze: You are the best. You continue to amaze me.
Jordan Adler: One of the greatest friends in my life. You inspire me every day.
Scott Pospichal: It’s been a great ride my friend. Let’s keep it going. I value our friendship.
Kenny Troutt: The gift you have given me and my family is priceless. Thank you for the Excel Opportunity and your friendship and inspiration.
Steve Smith: You keep me in check. You always steered me in the right direction. Thank you for believing in me.
Bill Andreoli: When I was at my darkest hour, you were there. Thank you.
Jimmy Delmore: You have had a major positive impact on my life. Thank you for all of your words of wisdom.
Coach Kuhl: You are with me every day of my life. Thank you for your leadership.
Annie Trajlinek: One of my best friends on the planet. We will be in rocking chairs together.
Robert T. Buss: No words can describe the fun, the great memories and lasting friendship you have given me.
Melody Marler Forshee: Thank you for your valuable publishing advice and constant encouragement. On Wisconsin!
Vanessa Hunter: You are the only person who has read this book more often than I have. Your vision, creativity and dedication are invaluable to me.
Kody and Jodi Bateman: You are amazing. Thank you for believing in me. We will see a BILLION together!
Foreword
Steve Schulz is living proof that nice guys finish first. We have many mutual friends and virtually all of us would agree that Steve is one of the good guys. Have you ever looked down at the caller ID on your smart phone and noticed that it was someone you didn’t want to talk to? In fact the person calling you was someone that was guaranteed to zap your energy for the rest of the day? What did you do? You pressed the ignore
button on your phone! You knew from the second your phone rang that if you answered it you would get an earful of negativity that was sure to, at the very least, bum you out, and at the worst, mess up your entire day. Steve Schulz is the opposite of that. When you meet Steve you are energized by his friendly demeanor, his attitude toward life, and his spontaneous sense of humor. Everyone loves Steve. And when it really comes down to it, one of the main reasons Steve has done well in business is because people want to be around him. He is easy to be with and he makes people feel good about themselves.
That is probably one of the reasons why we are friends today. I always look forward to seeing or talking with Steve. If Steve were to call me with a business idea, I would want to hear what he has to say because, first, I know he has my best interest in mind, and second, I like him. These are two of the critical keys to success in business.
I met Steve in the early 90s when we both signed up for the same network marketing company. We were both flat broke. I had dabbled in many companies over a period of 10 years but never made any money, and Steve had no experience in network marketing at all. In his words he was a dead broke full-time school teacher!
We were both learning the ins and outs of network marketing and because Steve was a nice guy, I wanted to be around him. We instantly became good friends and over the next 10 years we both built sizable five-figure monthly incomes. As a result, we spent many hours training together and traveling all over the world. I remember sitting in a crowd of new distributors at an event listening to Steve and his business partner train. I don’t remember exactly what they said but I do remember that they were fun, funny and yes, easy to like.
Why is this important? These are the same qualities that will make someone want to be around you and do business with you. It’s a simple formula. Yes, it’s true, this book IS about making money and sometimes it IS about the money. But you must become someone others want to be around if you want them to listen to you. When Steve approaches someone who knows him about a business, most of the time they say, Sure, Steve — what have you got? Tell me more!
People want to know what Steve is up to because he’s a likable guy and he’s fun to be around. After all, someone who has been making a full-time living in this profession for more than 20 years must be doing something right!
Here’s the bottom line: Steve brings credibility to our profession and he has proven that it is OK to be a nice guy and still have a wildly successful business. For some reason people in business think that to have it all, you must step on others. You must be shrewd, tenacious, and cutthroat! According to some business experts, you must be willing to climb over bodies to get to the top and you can only win at the expense of others. Steve’s story isn’t just compelling because he has won in life, but because he did it without hurting or exploiting others. He cares about people. One of the main reasons people like him is because his mission is to serve others and treat people right.
Since this book is about money, let’s talk about money for a minute. To be perfectly honest, back in my early days of mac and cheese three times a week — at 33 cents a box — and taking the bus to work because I didn’t have the money to fix my car, my number one need was to get money. I understood the idea of value exchange and knew that I needed to provide a lot of value to begin making money. But make no mistake about it, I got into network marketing to make money. Most people join because they want to have the freedom that a constant flow of income into their bank accounts can provide. If you were to ask 1,000 people to answer in one word why they got involved in network marketing, you would find that the highest percentage would say money!
They wouldn’t say friends
or travel
or freedom,
although all of these things are important. They want money because the money represents choices, regardless of what your life mission might be. I was no different and most likely neither are you! The green stuff is pretty powerful and compelling. It’s one of the main reasons we get involved, and it’s one of the key components to attracting others into our businesses. Steve nails it in this book. He does several things that make network marketing work for him, and you can do the same thing:
Be likable.
Be friendly.
Have fun.
Keep it simple.
Explain the money.
Get out your highlighter and pen and mark up this book! Use it as a guidebook to making your fortune in network marketing. You’re holding your future in your hands right now. See ya on the beach!

Money: Why You Need It and How You Can Help People With It
My entire life I have heard people say, Money is not everything,
or, Money brings out the evil in people.
I have never understood that. I always thought the people who said that were the ones who didn’t have any money! I believe that if you are a good person who has money, you will do good things. If you are a bad person who has money, well, you will continue to do bad things. This book is about money. How to get it, why you need it and how you can help a lot of people with it.
I grew up in the small town of Wisconsin Dells, in southcentral Wisconsin. It was a great place to grow up. It had everything — that small town feel but the action of a big city. Wisconsin Dells is the Midwest’s number one tourist attraction. The Wisconsin River is the main attraction. For thousands of years, the Wisconsin River has carved out the beautiful sandstone cliffs that line this powerful hard-working river. A town of only 2,400 permanent residents plays host to more than 100,000 guests from all over the world on a daily basis from Memorial Day through Labor Day each year. Today, Wisconsin Dells is known as the water park capital of the world and has turned into a year-round tourist destination.
I realize now that growing up in The Dells
shaped my way of thinking about money and dealing with people. I loved this town and still do. I remember Friday nights, the lights on the new football field, the packed stands and our love for the home team. It didn’t matter what the sport was, the Chiefs were the only game in town. As a young boy, Friday night was special. My friends and I would go and watch our heroes on the field that we dreamed of playing on one day. When that day came, we made the most of it.
My football coach, Fred Kuhl was a man who shaped me — and hundreds like me — into the person I am today. I love that man. I have never heard a negative word about Coach Kuhl. He worked us hard but loved us deeply. During practice he would always tell us, You will understand why we do this on Friday night. It will be worth it.
Coach could always get the most out of his players. Just when we thought we were going to die, he was able to get a little more out of us and that made all of the difference on Friday night.
Coach said to me one time, Never say, ‘I wish I would have’.
I will never forget that. I have lived my entire life with that statement in my head. With every decision I make, I hear Coach’s words in my ears. It hasn’t always worked out, but I have no regrets.
To paraphrase the famous quote by hockey legend Wayne Gretzky, remember, 100 percent of the shots you don’t take don’t go in. Take shots. Just take a shot. What if it works? Start living your life with that attitude and watch what happens. You will make more money, meet more people, and enjoy life to its fullest.
