About this ebook

This is the second volume of Gargatholil's 4-volume work, Depth Astrology: An Astrological Handbook--the first comprehensive handbook interpreting the astrological symbol set in the tradition of such pioneers as Dane Rudhyar, Liz Greene and Stephen Arroyo. In this volume, planetary placements in each of the 12 zodiacal signs are interpreted using the psycho-transformative depth astrology approach. "Planets" include the 10 traditional astrological planets, the Ascendant and Midheaven, the Moon's Nodes and the Part of Fortune. Each interpretation contains: an explanation of the essential meaning and potential manifestations of the planet in its sign placement based on the interaction between the planetary and zodiacal symbols, common meanings of the planetary placement on a positive-to-negative continuum, the transcendent potential of the planetary placement, manifestations of the planetary placement from a place of insecurity, and the "influence" of the planet when aspecting or aspected by another planet. The handbook is searchable using the Table of Contents, with links back to the Table of Contents for ease of multiple look-ups.

Depth Astrology - Planets in Signs is a valuable tool for the novice just entering the field of depth astrology, for the astrological professional desiring a look-up of planetary interpretations that provide guidance to the unfolding potentialities of planetary placements, or for anyone seeking to use the astrological symbol-set as a tool for self-discovery and growth.

Novices are encouraged to purchase Volume 1 - Introduction. The complete 4-volume set is also available as a single e-book.

Gargatholil

Gargatholil's interest in astrology began more than 40 years ago with his discovery of the works of Dane Rudhyar and Alan Leo. Their love of music goes back farther. One of the first albums Gargatholil bought was Freewheelin' Bob Dylan. In the 1980s, Gargatholil;s knowledge of astrology was further informed by the writing of Donna Cunningham, Stephen Arroyo and Liz Greene. Gargatholil has always appreciated astrology as a tool for self-knowledge and personal growth. He believes, while transits may be valuable for understanding the "astrol weather" one is experiencing, it is the natal chart that holds the key to interpreting the drives and motivations, qualities, internal conflicts and challenges, and potential of the personality resident in this lifetime. Gargatholil has long rejected using astrology to attempt to predict the future on both practical and spiritual grounds.Gargatholil has a Libra Sun and Taurus Ascendant (both ruled by Venus), with Moon in Capricorn in the tenth house (both ruled by Saturn) cusp Aquarius (ruled by Uranus). The primary rulers of Gargatholil's chart, Venus and Saturn, are conjunct in Virgo, while the Moon forms the point of a Yod to Saturn and Uranus. Understandably, Gargatholil has a straight gig and does not wish his identity to be revealed. He also is grateful to have been blessed with the capacity to bring the content of the Higher Mind to a more concrete and structured level.Gargatholil has eclectic taste in music. His criteria for considering something worthwhile listening to boils down to "as long as she's been doin' it right." Gargatholil lived the Sixties Countercultural experience and the music of that era occupies a special place in their heart.

SUN SIGN PLACEMENTS

Sun in Aries

Emerging Self-Identity

The Sun’s placement in Aries suggests that you have a strong and basic need to Be. Self-identity as a confirmation of your existence is likely to be a primal issue for you. Your need to feel yourself in existence and to experience yourself as a separate, autonomous being is often associated with a need to act to affirm self-identity. By acting, you assert your existence and your selfhood in the world. Much of the behavior and many of the personality characteristics associated with Sun in Aries are the result of your need to affirm your existence as an independent identity.

For the person with Sun in Aries, it may be said, You are what you do. Your sense of self tends to be associated with your capacity to act and with how you use that capacity. Your choice of actions springs from your self-concept. Thus, your actions--what you do in the world--both define your selfhood and are an expression of your self-identity.

The placement of Sun in Aries is generally seen as harmonious. This is symbolized by the natural trine existing between Aries and Leo, which is ruled by the Sun. Aries is the cardinal fire sign. The fire element of Aries is in harmony with the fiery nature of the Sun. Aries’ cardinality lends an active force to the fire energy. If there is any danger in this placement, it is in the overabundance of fire, spurred on to rush forward.

Qualities on Positive-Negative Continuum

The Sun’s placement in Aries suggests that there are certain personality characteristics and qualities with which you identify. Typical Sun-Aries qualities are listed below, with positive qualities listed first and their more negative, or dysfunctional counterparts listed afterward.

Quick, alert - Hasty, impatient

Leader - Domineering

Intuitively acting - Impulsive

Courageous - Foolhardy

Enthusiastic, genuine - Boisterous, naive

Self-aware - Self-centered

Assertive - Belligerent

Independent - Headstrong

Challenge-inspired - Danger-seeking

Transcendent Potential

At the transcendent level, the person with Sun in Aries is in a state of innocent ecstasy of Being. It is said, Self-realization is prelude to God-realization. Unencumbering yourself of layers of illusion, you have realized your True Selfhood. This was prefaced, necessarily, by the realization that the self is not the ego. Seeing that the ego is an obstruction to Innocence and true Freedom, you have abandoned it and treat it as an enemy. Taking up arms against the ego, you have fought it valiantly. As a result, your actions have become selfless. If you have been placed in a position of leadership, you are able to lead egolessly. Only in this way can you experience your True Being.

Insecurity

Being insecure with Sun in Aries, you are constantly asking yourself, Am I real yet? Not knowing what Reality is, how can you answer this question? The I that you refer to is the ego, which can never be real. Therefore, you have a deep and unfulfilled need to constantly prove yourself in order to establish your identity. Nothing is ever enough, of course, to sufficiently affirm your existential identity and, so, your attempts may become more and more aggressive or obnoxious. If you are blocked by anyone, you consider this a personal affront and a challenge to your existence. Your actions are motivated by your existential dread as you blindly push your way through life.

Aspecting influence

When Sun in Aries aspects the inner planets, the function symbolized by the aspected planet may be infused with energy. You may also experience a will to act focused on the function symbolized by the aspected planet. This may be helpful or problematic, depending on the particular aspect involved.

Aspected

When the Sun in Aries is aspected by outer planets, this is likely to affect your energy and will to act. Your attitude and sense of your essential self-identity may also be affected. Depending upon the aspecting planet and the aspect, you may be encouraged or challenged.

Sun in Taurus

Identity Is Derived from Possessions and Resources

The Sun’s placement in Taurus suggests that you have a need for physical and material security. This need often manifests itself as a need to acquire things in order to affirm your self-identity. You tend to feel that the more you have, the more worthy you are. Having things also gives you a greater feeling of material and physical security, of course. The more secure you are, the more substantial your selfhood feels. Your need to acquire may also be accompanied by a strong need to conserve, since keeping what you have is equally important for your self-esteem and sense of security. Much of the behavior and many of the personality characteristics associated Sun in Taurus are the result of your need to endure comfortably.

For the person with Sun in Taurus, it may be said, You are what you have. Your sense of self tends to be associated with your capacity to acquire and possess. Generally, the more you possess, the more secure you feel and the more substantial you feel. Your self-identity tends to be a reflection of those things that you have acquired or, seen from another viewpoint, you tend to acquire those things that reflect your identity and, therefore, what you have reflects who you are. It may be more difficult for you to have a positive self-image if you do not have much in the way of material possessions. If this is the case, you may compensate either by comparing yourself to a lower standard, being content with what you have or redefining wealth to focus on intangible or spiritual values. Conversely, if you have much, it is easier for you to succumb to the illusion that abundance is a sign of greater self-worth.

The placement of Sun in Taurus may be problematic in some instances. This is symbolized by the natural square existing between Taurus and Leo, which is ruled by the Sun. Taurus is the fixed earth sign. Fixed earth can symbolically smother the energy of the Sun. The heavy fixed earth energy tends to weigh down or block the fiery energy associated with the Sun. The Sun’s naturally active energy must operate in a slower environment. The result of this blockage or slowing of energy may manifest as dullness. On the other hand, there are opportunities inherent in the Sun-Taurus placement to enhance the organic aspect of life. Allow the Sun to nourish your garden and your garden will grow. It is your choice as to what the garden of your personhood grows. Its fruits may be external or yours may be an interior garden. Slow and steady nurturing and growth can lead to happiness and fulfillment.

Qualities on Positive-Negative Continuum

The Sun’s placement in Taurus suggests that there are certain personality characteristics and qualities with which you identify. Typical Sun-Taurus qualities are listed below, with positive qualities listed first and their more negative, or dysfunctional counterparts listed afterward.

Slow and steady – Sluggish, lazy

Determined, devoted - Stubborn

Caring and nurturing of the environment - Possessive, greedy

Stable, supportive - Rigid, stick-in-the-mud

Cautious, judicious - narrow minded, afraid of change

Earth-loving, fully aware through the senses – Sensually indulgent

Practical - Unimaginative

Creative (physically) – Materialistic

Transcendent Potential

At the transcendent level, the person with Sun in Taurus is full enjoyment of the Here and Now, without attachment. It is your level of detachment from this illusory, material world that frees you from the bondage of possessiveness and insecurity. From a transcendent perspective, you see that everything has value and beauty. You also realize that nothing is yours, for you (the ego) yourself are not real. Everything is Divine Gift. Knowing this, you freely give of the bounty that has been entrusted to you. This bounty is unlimited, once you are truly free. One who has all, possesses nothing, for what need have you anymore of possessions?

Insecurity

As someone with Sun in Taurus, your worst fear is likely to be that everything you have may be taken away. Since you are insecure about your own identity and even, subconsciously, the reality of your existence, you feel that you are nobody without your possessions. Therefore, you cling to what you have, whether these are things, people or qualities. You become very defensive if you feel your possessions are threatened and your bullish reaction can be sudden and violent. You are also capable of digging in your heals with incredible stubbornness and, while you may present a firm front, your stubbornness is really motivated by fear.

Aspecting influence

When Sun in Taurus aspects the inner planets, the function symbolized by the aspected planet may become subject to inertia. You may experience a slowing down of the planetary function. The function symbolized by the aspected planet may also be strengthened. This may be helpful or problematic, depending on the particular aspect involved.

Aspected

When the Sun in Taurus is aspected by outer planets, this is likely to affect stability and sense of enduringness felt by the person with Sun in Taurus, particularly with respect to self-identity. Your attitudes toward and/or mode of possessing may also be affected. Depending upon the aspecting planet and the aspect, you may be encouraged or challenged.

Sun in Gemini

Multi-faceted Self-identity

The Sun’s placement in Gemini suggests that you have a need for change and variety in your life. Your need for change and diversity is often driven by a need to acquire new experiences in order to affirm your self-identity. You tend to experience, not by acting, but by learning and knowing. Knowing things and having a wide variety of experiences generally enriches your self-esteem. You tend to see yourself as someone who is versatile, who knows about or knows how to do a lot of things. Much of the behavior and many of the personality characteristics associated with this placement are the result of your need for stimulating variety. If you are not exposed to changing stimuli, you are likely to feel bored and dull.

For the person with Sun in Gemini, it may be said, You are what you know. Knowing does not always have to be intellectual knowledge. It can be the knowledge of the world gained by varied experiences or simple know-how. Your selfhood is often identified by what you know and how much you know. For this reason, you are inclined to talk about what you know in order to communicate your worth to others. Talking to others is also a way that you gather knowledge and facts. If you are insecure, you may feel stupid, dull or limited. Generally, the more varied the knowledge and experience you have, the higher your self-esteem will be.

Sun in Gemini is generally seen as an easy placement. This is symbolized by the natural sextile existing between Gemini and Leo, which is ruled by the Sun. Gemini is the mutable air sign. Mutable air symbolically allows the radiant energy associated with the Sun to spread in all directions. Figuratively, your psychological weather is often like a clear, cloudless day. You can see for miles and miles, but you are not inclined to probe beyond the surface that is visible. You generally feel no need to do this because there is so much available for you to experience all around you. Air is associated with mental energy and with communication, both of which tend to be an important part of your character and self-identity. The constantly changing quality associated with mutability is very conducive to satisfying your need to know about things, since this quality allows you to shift from one object to another with ease.

Qualities on Positive-Negative Continuum

The Sun’s placement in Gemini suggests that there are certain personality characteristics and qualities with which you identify. Typical Sun-Gemini qualities are listed below, with positive qualities listed first and their more negative, or dysfunctional counterparts listed afterward.

Quick, alert - Frenetic, impatient

Multi-talented, versatile - Scattered, over-extended

Mental, emotionally cool - Aloof, uninvolved

Friendly, conversational - Social butterfly, incessantly talkative

Freedom loving - Uncommitted

Widely knowledgeable - Superficially opinionated

Light-hearted - Silly, immature

Transcendent Potential

At the transcendent level, the person with Sun in Gemini is free of binding attachments, but wise and responsible. You have used your mental abilities to pierce the illusion of the world. You have not done this by deep pondering, but by lightly perceiving the wonderful interconnections that everything makes with everything else. You see the ever-changing tapestry of experience and existence and you have concluded that there is nothing worth getting attached to. Figuratively, you are skating on the surface of the world, while at the same time respecting each and every part of it. This is the wisdom of loving non-attachment, as opposed to selfish and irresponsible lack of commitment. In your wisdom and Real Knowledge, you have become a Universal Child of Light. Be Here Now!* is what you ecstatically proclaim.

*Baba Ram Das

Insecurity

As someone with Sun in Gemini, your worst fear is likely to be the fear of being committed. Commitment, for you, means stagnation and being bound and restricted. Commitment prevents you from changing whenever and however you want. You think that, If I stop changing, I’ll be trapped. Being trapped and hemmed in feels like death to your ego, which must be fed with the illusion that you are free, master of your destiny and can do anything you want to do. Therefore, you react negatively to any threat of being tied down or committed to anything or anyone. Leave me alone! is a common response if you feel that someone or some situation is laying claims on you or saddling you with responsibility. Of course, because you are such a social being and you need the mental stimulation of human society, you do not really want to be alone, just free of responsibility and commitment.

Aspecting influence

When Sun in Gemini aspects the inner planets, the function symbolized by the aspected planet tends to be stimulated, often with mental energy. You may also experience a lightening up of the planetary function. This may be helpful or problematic, depending on the particular aspect involved.

Aspected

When the Sun in Gemini is aspected by outer planets, this is likely to affect the mental and communicative qualities associated with the person with Sun in Gemini’s self-identity. How you explore the world may also be affected, as well as your attitudes toward commitment or the value of knowledge and experience. Depending upon the aspecting planet and the aspect, you may be encouraged or challenged.

Sun in Cancer

Emotionally Conditioned Self-identity

The Sun’s placement in Cancer suggests that you have a need for rootedness in order to experience emotional security and well-being. Your need for emotional security often manifests itself as a need to nurture and to be nurtured in order to affirm your self-identity. Nurturing is most easily experienced in a sheltered, familiar environment and most people find this type of environment in the home and with family. Here, emotional bonds are likely to be strong and friendly. Much of the behavior and many of the personality characteristics associated with this placement are the result of your emotional needs.

For the person with Sun in Cancer, it may be said, You are what you feel. Your being is often so identified with your feelings that sometimes it is as if you are those feelings. What you are feeling at any particular moment is likely to be the most important determinant of who you are. Since moods and feelings are so changeable, your sense of your self and your character are also liable to change. You may not even perceive this for, if you are living in the moment of your feeling self, you may be so completely engulfed by your feelings that it is as if you have always been in that state, whatever that state may be.

Generally, however, your selfhood will not be so ephemeral as to be a captive of your momentary moods. For your feelings do not occur in isolation, but are produced from a matrix of those feelings and reactions you have experienced in the past. In fact, the conditioning of the past is generally quite significant in determining your present feelings. It may, therefore, also be said of you, You are the sum of the impressions of past experience.

The placement of the Sun in Cancer can be useful or problematic. This is symbolized by the natural semi-sextile existing between Cancer and Leo, which is ruled by the Sun. Cancer is the cardinal water sign. Cardinal water symbolically softens the fiery energy associated with the Sun. This softening can produce feelings of compassion and humility, resulting in a warm and caring character. Water, however, may also overwhelm fire. If this occurs, then it is your emotions that rule you, rather than you harnessing your emotions to motivate action. Water also threatens to drown fire, symbolizing the threat to your ego from an excess of empathy. This threat may prompt the ego to undertake defensive measures that produce negative effects on your character and personality.

Qualities on Positive-Negative Continuum

The Sun’s placement in Cancer suggests that there are certain personality characteristics and qualities with which you identify. Typical Sun-Cancer qualities are listed below, with positive qualities listed first and their more negative, or dysfunctional counterparts listed afterward.

Nurturing - Over-protective

Emotionally in tune - Moody

Sensitive - Emotionally vulnerable

Intuitive, deep - Withdrawn, shy

Sentimental - Maudlin

Traditional - Bound by the past

Family-centered - Dominated by parental ghosts, consumed with serving others (no life of your own)

Domestic - Sheltered

Transcendent Potential

At the transcendent level, the person with Sun in Cancer is liberated from the past and all conditioning. You have done this by freeing yourself from the demands of your ego. Turning a deaf ear to the promptings of the ego has allowed you to cease emotionally reacting to cues and promptings that are rooted in the past and have no reality in the present. Being free from your conditionings has resulted in your feeling a deep quietude. Free from the bondage of your ego, your need for self-gratifying nurturing (whether as giver or receiver) has been replaced by unselfish caring. You now truly feel, We are one eternal Family and your actions reflect this.

Insecurity

As someone with Sun in Cancer, your worst fear is likely to be the fear of being hurt by others. With your ego at center stage, you are so emotionally sensitive that any slight is felt as a blow. In reality, you are so insecure in your selfhood (knowing subconsciously the untenableness of the ego) that you cannot stand any attack on your ego, no matter how small or unintended. Your insecurity also prompts you to shut yourself in and erect formidable barriers to protect yourself from the outside world. Your mind reasons, By exposing my real self, I become vulnerable. Therefore, your real self is kept hidden and you operate solely through a hardened persona.

Aspecting influence

When Sun in Cancer aspects the inner planets, the function symbolized by the aspected planet may shine with warmth and emotion. This may be helpful or problematic, depending on the particular aspect involved.

Aspected

When the Sun in Cancer is aspected by outer planets, this is likely to affect the emotional aspect of the person with Sun in Cancer’s self-identity. How you deal with your conditioning may also be affected. Depending upon the aspecting planet and the aspect, you may be encouraged or challenged.

Sun in Leo

Experience of Self-identity as Persona

The Sun’s placement in Leo suggests that you have a need for recognition and appreciation. This often manifests as a need to attract attention to yourself in order to affirm your self-identity. This may be positively or negatively played out. The positive acting out of this need includes all kinds of creative pursuits. You may feel driven to express yourself and, consciously or subconsciously, your creations become an expression and reflection of your persona. Alternatively, you may engage in simply calling attention to yourself by any means possible, including outrageous or anti-social behavior. Much of the behavior and many of the personality characteristics associated with this placement are the result of your need for self-expression and attention.

For the person with Sun in Leo, it may be said, You are the role you play. Often, it is easy for you to confuse self and persona, taking your persona to be your actual true self. Although most people, in actuality, live life through their persona and do not think about their true self, in you this tendency is likely to be even stronger. Your persona and how it is received is apt to be very important to you. It may be difficult for you to separate yourself from the role that you are playing in this life.

The placement of the Sun in Leo is generally seen as favorable, since Leo is ruled by the Sun. This tends to create a very strong sense of being and selfhood. The qualities associated with Leo offer the existential self an optimum mechanism with which to project itself and take on coloring and form in the world. Leo is the fixed fire sign. Fixed fire is the natural element through which the fire energy of the Sun can express itself. The fixity of Leo gives this element strength and presence. Thus, unless the Sun is faced with difficult aspects or placements otherwise, or you are operating at a level of consciousness from which insecurity is inescapable, having Sun in Leo symbolizes a strong personality and sense of self.

Qualities on Positive-Negative Continuum

The Sun’s placement in Leo suggests that there are certain personality characteristics and qualities with which you identify. Typical Sun-Leo qualities are listed below, with positive qualities listed first and their more negative, or dysfunctional counterparts listed afterward.

Creative - Controlling

Expressive - Ostentatious

Dramatic - Flamboyant

Regal, powerful - Authoritarian, bossy

Self-confident - Self-centered, self-conscious

Emotionally warm - Intense, quick tempered

Loyal - Cliquish

Generous - Paternalistic

Transcendent Potential

At the transcendent level, the person with Sun in Leo has come to know the world is truly but a stage. Thus, you are unattached to the role you play. Whatever that role may be, you shine on everyone and you let God’s light be reflected through you. You have attained true nobility and high character. All of the good and noble qualities are expressed through your persona, but you do not claim any of these attributes as yours, knowing that they are gifts from the Divine. Having transcended the realm of the ego, you heartily agree when it is said, as in the Incredible String Band song, Maya, to joyfully play your role in life’s drama.

Insecurity

As someone with Sun in Leo, your worst fear is likely to be the fear of personal rejection. Consciously or subconsciously, you think, Maybe, no one will like me. Worse yet, maybe, no one will notice me. Therefore, all of your concern is with the impression you will make on others. You may put on a bravado show to mask the insecurity that you feel. Or, you may be so insecure about your likeability that you hide yourself, demur to others’ wishes and act more like a meek mouse than a lion. At the extreme of insecurity, you may see that no one is noticing you and, since you must have attention to feed your existential insecurity, you act obnoxiously in order to get at least some degree of attention, even if it is negative.

Aspecting influence

When Sun in Leo aspects the inner planets, the function symbolized by the aspected planet may be imbued with powerful, creative energy. This function may also be activated to express itself strongly through your persona. This may be helpful or problematic, depending on the particular aspect involved.

Aspected

When the Sun in Leo is aspected by outer planets, this is likely to affect the self-expressiveness and sense of inner security felt about the person with Sun in Leo’s self-identity. Your attitude toward and conception of your persona may also be affected. Depending upon the aspecting planet and the aspect, you may be encouraged or challenged.

Sun in Virgo

Self-examining identity

The Sun’s placement in Virgo suggests that you have a need for perfection. This often manifests as a need to improve the things around you in order to affirm your self-identity. You have a need to feel that you are as perfect as you can be. The more you see perfection reflected in the things around you, the more perfect you feel inside. Conversely, the more you see perfection lacking in the things around you, the more this subconsciously reflects on your own imperfections. It is as if the external world is a mirror for your own essence. Much of the behavior and many of the personality characteristics associated with this placement are the result of your drive toward perfection.

For the person with Sun in Virgo, it may be said, You are as you measure yourself. Because you see perfection as the touchstone validating your existence and self-identity, you are constantly examining both yourself and your environment to judge the extent to which you have achieved that state of perfection and how much you need to improve. The extent to which you engage in self-examination rather than criticism depends upon your awareness and sense of self-responsibility.

The placement of the Sun in Virgo can be useful or problematic. This is symbolized by the natural semi-sextile existing between Virgo and Leo, which is ruled by the Sun. Virgo is the mutable earth sign. Mutable earth may, like the dust, symbolically obscure the light of the Sun. The Sun’s natural energy is not able to reach through the blanketing particulars that obstruct it. Coolness is the result. This coolness may manifest as a lack of enthusiasm and energy or as level-headedness and objectivity. Seen from a different angle of vision, however, the Sun figuratively illuminates each grain of the Virgoan dust. Thus, everything is seen in remarkable detail and clarity. The light of knowledge shines on your external and internal perceptions, allowing you to discriminate and distinguish between the good and the bad, the useful and the superfluous, the more perfect and the less perfect.

Qualities on Positive-Negative Continuum

The Sun’s placement in Virgo suggests that there are certain personality characteristics and qualities with which you identify. Typical Sun-Virgo qualities are listed below, with positive qualities listed first and their more negative, or dysfunctional counterparts listed afterward.

Self-improving - Perfectionist

Self-examining - Critical of others, self-deprecating

Proper, moral, high standards - Prudish, self-righteous

Practical - Unimaginative

Systematic - Rigid, routinized

Discriminating - Picky

Analytical - Incapable of taking bold action

Detail-oriented - Nit-picking

Reserved - Cold emotionally

Service-oriented - Slavish

Sun in Libra

Experience of Self-identity as a Self-and-Other Balance

The Sun’s placement in Libra suggests that you have a need for harmony and balance, particularly in your external environment. If you are able to create and sustain harmony and balance externally, you will generally feel secure and at peace within yourself. Your desire for external harmony and balance often manifests itself as a desire to please others. Your desire to please is associated with another, related, need that is common among those with Sun in Libra.

This is the need to be in a relationship in order to affirm your self-identity. Because you are dependent on feedback from your external environment in order to feel inwardly secure and validated, you tend to seek secure and fulfilling relationships in order to always have this feedback accessible. Your attitude of dependency on the external also creates this mental and emotional habit, which is easily fulfilled within a relationship. Much of the behavior and many of the personality characteristics associated with this placement are the result of your need for to be engaged in a self-validating relationship and, more generally, to see yourself positively in others’ reactions to you.
