We cannot linger, Breyden urged, as he glanced back in the direction of the park. His heart ached for the friends they left behind. They deserve a proper burial. Not just to be dropped into some pit.

Do we have any connections in Lexington? Brent asked.

    Zorom shook his head.

We do, Steve said. But we’ll have to go to them. If they tracked my ID, they may have traced this. Steve took out his cell phone and dropped it on the ground before crushing it with the heel of his boot.

Do they know you? Do you know how to get there? Breyden asked with raised eyebrows.

Yes, but we still have a ways to go, and I’m sure we’ll be tailed. Steve waved everyone to follow. He kept to the trees as they worked their way through the park.

I think we should find a place to lie low, unless we want to shoot our way across town, Brent suggested, as several more hovercrafts zipped over the treetops above them.

Breyden nodded and the others agreed as well.

Then let’s find a spot quick, Steve said. There’s an old abandoned school due east. We should be able to hide there. Plus, it would give us a good vantage point to watch from.

So, how did you know about this particle? Maya demanded from Breyden as they followed Steve and the others.

I have some new friends who are well connected, and it seemed like a good way to end a siege. How about you? Breyden questioned, as he continued to watch over his shoulder for any signs of pursuit.

    Siege? Maya’s father looked concerned.

We helped rescue as many as we could from the cave, but the People’s Government murdered everyone else—over a thousand of them. They chased us to the city and attacked. Since I’m their main target, we figured we could break the siege if I was spotted elsewhere, Breyden informed them.

Murdered? Maya and her father gasped.

We were told the cave collapsed during a rescue attempt, Maya stammered.

What liar told you that? The same person who sent you to your death in St. Louis? Breyden spat. I saw them lined up and shot before being dumped into a pit. A rage towards the Underground conspirators and the People’s Government burned very close to the surface, threatening to explode. The loss of Shane and Juan added to the pressure.

He’s not a liar. Maybe he was just protecting me from the horrors of what really happened, Maya countered.

Yeah, keep telling yourself that. Breyden shook his head.

Hey, I don’t have to listen to a…a…soldier from the People’s Government. A soldier who wouldn’t know the truth if it wasn’t for the Underground! Maya tried to fight Breyden’s words, and in her anger she forgot to watch where she was going and tripped on a protruding tree root.

Breyden’s arm shot out, catching her before she fell.

Don’t touch me! Breyden released her arm, dropping her on the ground. Hey! Why did you do that?

The same Underground that sent you to your death, Breyden stated as Steve brought them to a halt at the edge of some trees.

There’s the school. Steve pointed to an old, broken down three-story structure.

Everyone scanned the surrounding area and the sky above for any hint of unwanted eyes. A hover car flew overhead to the south of them, but it wasn’t a military vehicle.

Running could draw attention to ourselves, Zorom said.

I say we do it in small groups, Steve suggested. To make sure no one is behind us, let’s really space this out.

I’ll go last, Breyden offered. I’m the one they really want. If it gets too hot, I can always lead them away from you.

I’ll wait with you. I still have some surprises up my sleeves. Nick winked.

Okay, try and wait five or ten minutes between groups. I’ll find a spot to watch for you. Zorom, you come with me. Then you three. Steve pointed to Brent, Maya and her father.

After Steve decided the order they would head to the school, he and Zorom strolled out into the open and casually made their way to the old school. They walked as if they didn’t have a care in the world. Breyden’s heart pounded in his ears, expecting he would have to rush to their aid at any moment.

And I wasn’t sent to my death. My father and I volunteered to come. This particle could change the future, Maya said loudly, causing Breyden to scrunch his face and hold a finger to his lips. Sorry, she added, her eyes darting everywhere.

Maya speaks the truth. We chose to come. I’m Tom, by the way, Mr. Timothy extended his hand and Breyden accepted it. Thank you. We owe you, that’s twice you’ve saved us.

Did you know everyone who has tried to purchase that item is dead? Breyden asked. Breyden desperately wanted to make them, especially Maya, see his side of things. He was sure the Underground knew she and her father would be captured or killed. She was a high value target before, which means they still wanted her. Even though Breyden’s anger boiled because of her stubbornness, he couldn’t stop thinking of how beautiful she was. Her deep blue-green eyes held him captive; he flushed before looking away.

Then why were you going to purchase it? Maya snapped.

I wasn’t. We were going to steal it. Breyden smirked. So, how did you volunteer? Did they make it seem like they desperately wanted the stuff? That no one else was willing to go and get it? They made you feel like it was your idea, but you were chosen. Think about all the troops we killed to save you back there.

Matt would not do that to me or my father. He loves me. He assured us we would be all right. Maya’s voice shook.

So, you’re going to go back to those losers? Breyden said.

And just where are we supposed to go? With you? Hanging around with you hasn’t been a party, Maya retorted.

"Well, at least I keep saving your life, not jeopardizing it."

They’ve made it. Nick stated the obvious. He glanced around and then moved over to a fallen log to have a seat.

Maya and her father followed him, while Breyden peered in the direction from which they’d just arrived.

We’ve got about five minutes. Tom read his watch.

Impossible, Maya huffed, crossing her legs and folding her arms across her chest, eyeing Breyden.

I’m going to make sure we aren’t being tracked. Breyden worked his way back the direction they had come.

    Good! Maya spat.

Breyden crept through the trees, his eyes up, scanning the area. Something told him they were out there, searching for him. He was their number one target, and now he had possession of a highly regulated substance. There wasn’t a chance they weren’t coming. We need to do the unexpected. They’ll be coming from all directions, he thought, as multiple hovercrafts flew overhead in the direction of the school. They’re setting up a perimeter.

Crap! Breyden flew back to where Maya, Nick, Tom, and Brent waited. He found them huddled at the edge of the trees, spying on the three hovercrafts touching down in the schoolyard. Over thirty soldiers sprang from the vehicles and began hustling toward the school in attack positions. Dogs barking from somewhere behind them drew their attention.

The thought of a clean getaway was too good to be true. Breyden glanced back over his shoulder.

What do we do? Brent asked, clutching his
