A massive smile spread across Breyden’s face as he descended the front of the pyramid. Jonas wore the exact same expression while heading down the steps on the opposite side of the arena. Breyden wanted to run and give his giant friend a hug, but repressed the desire, so as not to destroy the unknown rescue plan. He marched through the obstacle course, casting glances around the stadium, half expecting to see more of his friends.

The soft roar of the crowd filled the stadium while the two combatants made their way towards each other. Breyden tried to figure out how they were going to get him out of a packed stadium. Do they know about James and will they be able to find him, let alone help him?

Rounding a section of trees, Breyden spotted a club between their trunks and snatched it up off the ground. He twirled it casually like a majorette as he continued drawing closer to his large friend.

They reached opposite ends of the lake at about the same moment, and their smiles grew even wider.

Is this the mighty Breyden Pry. This small man, Jonas bellowed, to the delight of the crowd. I think I’ll drown the little man in the lake. He flexed his enormous muscles in bodybuilder poses, gritting his teeth menacingly.

Breyden tapped the end of the club against his open palm. He shook his head, trying to convey boredom.

I’m going to take you for a swim. Jonas pointed to Breyden and then made a breaking gesture by putting his two hands together and twisting them apart. The crowd roared with enthusiasm.

Breyden struggled to stifle a laugh at the way Jonas worked the crowd before he started to make his way around the small lake. When Jonas was within ten yards, Breyden lowered into a ready position, like a cat preparing to pounce. He gripped the club with both hands and cocked it to the side. He wanted to ask some direct questions but knew the arena had cameras and microphones all over the place.

I’m gonna drown you in the lake, little man, Jonas threatened, and the increase in cheers confirmed Breyden’s suspicions about listening devices.

You’ll never lay a hand on me, Breyden spat, wagging the club, indicating he was ready to strike. How will he tell me the plan?

They started to circle each other like boxers in a ring. Breyden took several threatening jab steps towards his friend, trying to make it look real.

Jonas charged with outstretched arms, which Breyden easily ducked, and he used the club to trip his friend. Jonas stumbled into the lake with a large splash, raining water down for twenty yards along the shore. The excitement among the crowd heightened, and camera flashes winked at Breyden from his peripheral vision.

Breyden twirled the club once more while Jonas rose up out of the lagoon, dripping water and mud like some sort of sea monster. He flashed a mischievous grin and then waved a hand as if daring Breyden to join him.

Are you afraid of the lake? Jonas kicked water all over Breyden.

Water? You won’t have the advantage in there, Breyden spat.

Prove it! Jonas roared, backing farther out into the small lake.

I need to get in the water. We must hurry before they release the creatures.

Breyden sprang forward with the club raised high above his head. He purposely got too close when he started to swing down. Jonas caught the club with one hand and the front of Breyden’s shirt with the other. He swung Breyden over his head and then dove deeper into the lake.

Breyden couldn’t see anything in the dark murky water. He could feel Jonas’s hands still holding onto him when the water started to move away from him, as if he’d entered a bubble. He discovered he could breathe and a small light appeared, along with Sampson and Jack.

What? How? Breyden shook his head in confusion while they all floated in the slow suspended state. What is that? Breyden pointed to several sides of beef and several plastic buckets of what looked like red paint.

    Our deaths… Jonas started.

That can wait. There’s a lot more we can do with teleportation than even the People’s Government realizes, my friend. But first we need to perform a little surgery and we need to hurry, Sampson informed him.

You know about the tracking device? How are you going to get it out? Breyden questioned, noticing Jack seemed to be holding a variation of the remote control found in Jenny’s parents’ lab.

Just take off your shirt and turn around, Jack ordered.

You’re going to operate in here? Breyden’s eyes grew wide and fear started to course through his body. "They put it next to my spine."

Oh, we’ve got it all worked out, my friend. And, we don’t want your tracker to leave this arena. They must think you died here. Don’t worry, we’ve got your and Jonas’s deaths all taken care of. We figure we have only a few minutes to get you out of the lake before they release the water creatures.

Now, we must hurry. Your shirt. Jack motioned up with his fingers.

Breyden stripped off his shirt as fast as he could in the strange low-gravity enclosure. I still don’t know how you’re going to get it out.

I told you, we’ve made some amazing discoveries about teleportation. Some of these involve medical procedures, Sampson winked.

We can use it to extract things that aren’t part of the original object. For example, Jack turned on the strange device which created a bubble-like ball, about half the size of a basketball, and pushed it halfway into Breyden’s back. A tracking device is not naturally a part of your body.

Breyden felt pressure and a strange warm tickle in the left center of his back. If he could have jumped in the slow motion field, he would have. Out of the corner of his eye, he caught sight of Jack’s hand inside his back and it almost stopped his heart.

There. Jack held the small tracking device up for everyone to see.

The strange sensation in Breyden’s back disappeared, and he turned to see the small tracer. Wow, that’s amazing. How did you figure out all this?

Later. Now we have to arrange your death, Sampson stated.

They’re here. Jonas pointed to the monstrous beasts circling their small underwater room.

Sampson took the tracking device from Jack and pushed it into a pile of meat Breyden had noticed on their arrival. Doctor, if you will.

Jack used the new remote to create a ball around the meat and the buckets. Once they were all hovering inside the new field, he then moved the meat and the buckets out into the water and released them.

The buckets sank to the bottom and the blood filled the lake. The beasts attacked the meat in a feeding frenzy.

We have about five minutes. Sampson checked his watch.

My friend James, we need to find him, like—yesterday, Breyden stressed.

We are working on it. Let’s get out of here where we can make plans. Sampson’s usual joyful expression disappeared from his face.

Then you don’t know where he is? Breyden affirmed more than asked.

I’m sorry… Sampson started to speak when suddenly the scenery changed and they landed on the floor of what appeared to be another warehouse. "We searched every prison on Terisal. There is no sign
