Breyden stared down at the radio in his hand for a brief moment. How many of you are there? he spoke into the device.

Thousands! a barely distinguishable reply crackled out of the device.

Was there an escape tunnel dug when they created this shelter? Breyden asked Shaun as they stared at the massive cave-in.

I don’t think so. Shaun shook his head in disbelief.

Surely they created air shafts. How well stocked are they? Breyden asked.

I don’t know. Shaun acted lost at the enormity of the situation. But, I have friends—and family—in there.

Did they set off an explosion here? Jenny asked, as Ryan and Zane climbed around the pile of rubble.

Yes, they sure… Breyden paused and remembered the massive dust cloud he and Jenny had witnessed from the surface. What’s the fastest way to the surface from here?

    What? Shaun asked.

The surface. Where is the nearest exit to get top side? Breyden asked with urgency in his voice.

Jenny darted forward, snatched Breyden’s hand, and pulled him back the way they had come. Shaun and the two boys followed in their wake. When they reached the heart of the underground center with the shops and make-shift apartments, Jenny turned the opposite direction of the control room. Every so often a lifeless body lay sprawled across the floor; a body littered with holes, oozing pools of blood.

As they hurried down the main walkway into the market area, the sound of voices prompted Breyden to usher them all into the shadows of an open shop doorway. The volume and the number of speakers continued to grow, joined with boots thumbing on cement. A little before they reached Breyden and the other’s location, the lights around the shopping center sprang to life.

It sounds like an army. They still have power? Shaun’s panicked voice whispered.

Yes, but whose. They aren’t moving in formations or patterns followed by the People’s Army. Breyden strained to listen to the approaching crowd.

A loud crash, followed by several more crashes, mingled with the sound of breaking glass. The voices grew into distinguishable conversations, forcing Breyden and the others to retreat deeper into the shadows of the shop.

Wait here, Breyden whispered, as he ventured closer to the door to take a peek at what was happening. He kept in the shadows of the darkened shop and avoided stepping into the light coming through the open door.

What about this shop? a voice asked not too far away.

Leave it. They’ll be back, another answered.

    And the bakery?

Take what you want, the second answered again.

Sweet! A shame really, we won’t be getting their stuff anymore, the first said, followed by a door being kicked in.

Good point. Grab me a couple of donuts, the first responded.

Hey, we all want one, a third voice stated.

Soon, more and more people made their way down the market. Breyden found a good spot where he could watch a group of the underground looting shops. They appeared to have a list of occupants who wouldn’t be returning. In fact, several conversations alluded to the people trapped in the cavern behind the market.

Just a bunch of thieves. Breyden spat under his breath. He tried to remember the name plastered across the front of the shop he and the others were in as the underground soldiers entered the shops nearby.

The underground worked their way through the shops next door. They robbed from certain shops and carts, while they left others. The men joked and laughed at the discovery of their new possessions.

This should make my old lady smile, one of them joked as he held up a pretty beaded necklace.

This perfume might help too, another shouted, tossing the first a small bottle.

Screaming of a different kind drowned out the laughter, and the men turned to see an old woman hustling up the street. The men fell silent as she rushed them and started tearing the stolen items from their hands. Put those things back! she demanded in shrill voice. Loose gray hair flailed in the air, giving her a wild appearance.

Look you old hag, they ain’t coming back, the youngest of the group said as he faced Breyden’s shop. As he picked up his stuff from the ground, Breyden recognized him as one of the underground he had attacked a few nights back.

The woman spun towards the man and raised her arm as if to slap him, when another woman rushed up behind and stopped her before she could make contact with the soldier. The old woman managed to get in a final kick as the brunette woman pulled her back.

You should be ashamed of yourself, the brunette barked at them. You better get out of here before I turn her loose.

Come on lads, we’ll collect this stuff later on, said one.

But they ain’t coming back, the younger protested again. They’re dead.

This remark made the old woman break down into tears and the brunette wrapped her arms around the woman consolingly.

They were good people, the woman stammered to the underground troops.

They were Subs, a soldier barked back at the woman.

This statement almost floored Breyden. Even down here, people were trying to make others lower than themselves—that somehow what happened to them didn’t matter if they weren’t the same as you.

As the women turned away from the soldiers, Breyden saw the brunette’s face for the first time. It was Maya. Maya, who had caused him to search out the truth, who he thought was killed on Centalpha 6. His head spun with relief. She was alive and as beautiful as ever. He fought the urge to rush out and hug her. His guilt swept away, and a burden lifted. He stepped backward into a display of lanterns, knocking them to the floor with a loud crash. Adrenaline replaced Breyden’s shock at seeing Maya, and he leaped back to the others and motioned for them to hide.

The sound drew the attention of the two women and the retreating soldiers.

What was that? one of the underground soldiers asked.

    I don’t know, Maya stated.

We better check it out, another soldier said.

No, I’ll do it. We don’t want any more stuff mysteriously disappearing, Maya protested as she made her way to the shop.

She entered the shop with caution. Hello? Is anyone there? she asked as she stepped into the darkness. She spotted the downed display and the scattered lanterns almost immediately.

What is it? one of the soldiers demanded. He tried to approach the shop, but the old woman blocked his way.

It looks like a stand fell over, Maya called back.

Well, who caused it to fall? a soldier asked.

Just give me a second, Maya called as she worked her way deeper into the shop. She was careful not to knock anything else over as she walked into the back of the shop.

    Breyden remained motionless
