    Introduction

I have a habit of coming up with pithy one-liners and potentially profound pronouncements and recording them for future use. My collection of random remarks has proliferated alarmingly, to the point that I would not be able to find a place for all of them in my published works. I created this little book to share these ideas for the amusement and illumination of others.

All entries in this book are original creations; I did not read or hear them from other sources prior to authoring them. A number of the insights I documented years ago now seem obvious to me, but they weren't so apparent when I first wrote them. Some of these ideas may have been expressed by others in similar ways, but they came to me purely.

Read this book with a light heart, an open mind, and an active sense of humor. Some things I've written may be off-putting to certain people and confusing to others. This is not my intention, but neither is it my intention to limit myself to someone else's idea of what is acceptable.

It is my wish that this book bring you moments of wonder, joy, and laughter.

    Chapter 1: Life

Life is just a board game.

None of us has all the answers; we still are figuring out the questions.

    Authenticity is the new authority.

The most profound insights seem obvious once they are pointed out.

You can truly make a choice only when you recognize that other choices are available.

The greatest regrets in life are not the things you have done that didn't turn out well. The greatest regrets are the things you wanted to do but lacked the courage, energy, or self-confidence to pursue.

The value of a life is not measured by its length, but by its richness.

You don't reach the end of a journey except by going on it.

The last thing to go in life is not the sense of hearing; it's the sense of humor. When you lose that, it's over!

Practice reckless optimism and nonsensical anticipation.

That made my day before it even started!

None of us truly thinks outside the box; we just have differently shaped boxes.

I don't much care what other people do, as long as they don't do it in the street and block traffic.

Most people's failures in life occurred because they thought of something ridiculous and didn't stick with it.

Those that take few risks are more likely to survive, but less likely to excel.

Don't throw out the dishes with the rinse water. (An expression I coined to keep so many infants from being flung onto lawns.)

Don't take life too seriously. In most cases, the worst that will happen is you'll end up with a good anecdote.

In life there are no wrong turns, only detours.

When your back is against the wall, it's a good indication that you need to get out of the corner.

In physical life, there is a balance between fear of the unknown and curiosity about the unknown. When the curiosity outweighs the fear, we choose the new path.

There is a difference between being off track and blazing a trail.

    One of the dangers of
