Introduction

In the introduction to David and Goliath: Underdogs, Misfits and the Art of Battling Giants, author Malcolm Caldwell advances the central premise in his book by outlining and analyzing the mano a mano duel between the giant and the sling-shot artist.

That premise is easily stated and summarized. Simply put, Caldwell believes that much of the value in our world is accrued from this type of lopsided contest, because the odds produce greatness and beauty, in his words.

Moreover, we consistently get these kinds of conflicts wrong, according to the author. We misread and misinterpret them, based on Caldwell's belief that the qualities that give giants strength are often the source of their greatest weakness. In addition, being an underdog can change people, he maintains, opening doors, creating opportunities and enlightening and educating them.

To back up this premise, Caldwell delves into the circumstances surrounding the battle. When Goliath stepped forward to represent the Philistines in the battle for the Elah Valley, he was engaging in what was known as single combat, an individual challenge in which one representative of each side was chosen to do battle to avoid the overwhelming number of casualties a full-on conflict would have created.

From there, Caldwell breaks down the respective military forces that were in play behind the scenes. Both sides had cavalry, infantry and projectile warriors, who would today be known as artillery. He analyzes the advantages of
