      In early September of 1982, I was beginning my third year of conservatory studies at Philadelphia’s New School of Music. I also began spending my free evenings in the third floor practice rooms with my double bass—and an unseen observer staring over my shoulder.

      When setting myself up for several hours of practicing, it was my habit to face the window (if the room had one), while having my back to the door, a simple example of psychological isolation. Shortly after I’d begin playing, the sense that someone was standing just outside the door would also begin.

      Well, musicians are a curious breed. Someone was just standing out there listening, right? I would call out, Hey, kid, what’s going on?

      No answer. And that sense of a presence would persist. I’d open the
