      An Odd Experience at Cape Cod

      My friends in the Counterculture were all telling me, Hey, Rob, you’ve really got to see Martha’s Vineyard!

      So, in April of 1971, I hitchhiked from northwest Connecticut to Martha’s Vineyard Island in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Grabbing the last ferry of the day from Wood’s Hole on the mainland, I arrived in Vineyard Haven at sunset. I hadn’t booked ahead for a room, but I wasn’t worried. From a phone booth, I called a couple of numbers someone had given me, friends of theirs with whom I could stay.

      I dialed the numbers several times and watched the last rays of daylight diminish. No answers. Now I was concerned.

      Martha’s Vineyard was an insular society, one of Old Money and conservative politics. I
