About this ebook

For 2000 years the Christian faith has had a big impact on the world. Many different Christian traditions have developed but Christians worldwide are united in their respect for their source book, the bible. To discover core Christian beliefs, it is important to read the bible’s own words. But it is not easy to start reading the bible. It’s a big book! The action takes place in what we now call the Middle East. The story covers a long period of ancient history from about 2000 BC to about 95 AD and involves many names that are foreign to us. These studies pick out parts of the bible covering 10 key aspects of Christian belief and include notes helping you to understand the context. The studies cover basic Christian beliefs about who we humans are, what God is like and the importance to us all of Jesus Christ, his life and death – and resurrection!
You can use these studies as an individual or as a small group. Each of the 10 chapters in this eBook is a self-contained study and could take you about an hour. Each chapter has an introduction that summarises something of the previous studies. If you study in a group and new people join in, they should be able to follow what you are doing. By the end you should have clear information on the core beliefs of Christians worldwide, based on the original source material, the bible.

These studies are based on a 10 part study series called What Christians Believe given to me in 2009 by Betty Milton of Birmingham, UK. The topics and bible passages Betty chose have been very useful in developing these studies. Many thanks, Betty.

Thanks to my husband Dennis for preparing this document for publication as an eBook and also to our friends who did these studies with us.

    The Aim of these Studies

Christianity has had a big impact on the world over the last 2000 years. Many different Christian traditions have developed but Christians worldwide are united in their respect for their source book, the bible. To discover core Christian beliefs, it is important to read the bible’s own words. But it is not easy to start reading the bible. It’s a big book! The Bible

The bible is a library of books originally written in Hebrew, Aramaic or Greek. So we must use translations. For 400 years the bible has been available in English, translated by teams of scholars. The English translation now often used in the UK is the New International Version (NIV). The questions in these studies are based on the NIV. To use these studies you need to read the bible, either a printed copy or online, for example at www.biblegateway.com.

The story of Jesus divides our history into BC (Before Christ or BCE Before the Common Era) and AD (in Latin, Anno Domini, meaning the year of our Lord). In the same way the bible is divided into the Old Testament (before Jesus lived on earth) and the New Testament (from the birth of Jesus to about 90 AD). The contents page of a bible
