About this ebook
Bethany Hamilton has become a fitness expert by virtue of being a professional athlete who has excelled—and she's done it while overcoming incredible challenges. Whether you know Bethany or not, whether you surf or not, everyone has challenges, and in Surfer Style, Bethany shares some of her core experiences with body, mind and spirit. Sharing her expertise as an athlete, New You helps young girls develop a healthy lifestyle, understand their changing bodies, gain confidence, and establish a pattern of healthy living starting at a young age. This book includes workouts specially developed for young girls by Bethany’s personal trainer, recipes and information on healthy eating based on “Bethany’s food pyramid,” which follows the Mediterranean diet, and advice on deepening your spiritual health, for a total body wellness book perfect for growing girls. This isn't a book about Bethany, this is a book about wellness, becoming your best “you,” through physical and spiritual balance, because spiritual health is just as important as physical health.
Bethany Hamilton
Bethany Hamilton is a source of inspiration to millions. In 2003, while surfing, she lost her left arm to a 14-foot tiger shark. With resilience and tenacity, Bethany returned to the water a month later, and within two years won her first national title. Her unbelievably positive attitude fascinated the world, resulting in an autobiography that was later adapted into the film Soul Surfer. Her courage and talent led to her induction into the Surfer’s Hall of Fame in 2017. Bethany and her husband, Adam Dirks, are also involved in charities such as Friends of Bethany, a foundation she and her family created to support amputees and youth. In addition, Bethany authored Body and Soul to encourage others toward confidence and fitness. Her new documentary Bethany Hamilton: Unstoppable brings her passions together, showcasing her world-class surfing and love for life as well as her message of female empowerment and never giving up.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Girls face so many lies about what makes them valuable, what they should look like and who they should be. It is great that Bethany Hamilton has written a guide for girls to look and feel better, in light of God’s word and purpose. Body & Soul: A Girl’s Guide to A Fit, Fun And Fabulous Life is a the perfect book for the teen or tween girl in your life. It is filled with lots of information for healthy living — exercises, recipes, establishing routines and healthy eating. Bethany also makes sure to include God’s views on a healthy lifestyle by focusing on what He says about it. I think this would be a great book for moms and daughters to work through together — what a great way to establish and reinforce a healthy lifestyle for the whole family.Recommended.(Thanks to Zonderkidz for a review copy. I feel blessed with so many things right now …
like the ability to grow in the knowledge of God’s love and the life he calls us to live through him, and the understanding of how to be an overall healthier person. There is so much I’ve already learned throughout my journey, and I’m grateful to be able to share it all with you in the chapters you are about to read.
There have been numerous people in my life who have taught and encouraged me in my quest to better understand my body.
First, I’d like to thank my parents. They’re the ones who encouraged my love for surfing right from the start. Not only that, but both made it possible to choose healthy foods in my diet and work with some awesome trainers.
I’d like to thank my sister-in-law for showing great work ethic and helping me translate my thoughts to paper. Thanks for always seeking the Lord; his love shows in your life! I feel very blessed to work with you and have you as my sister.
I’d also like to thank Dustin and Kirby Dillberg and the Dillberg ohana for educating and encouraging me so much throughout the years. Dustin, your expertise is RAD. Let the learning journey continue!
To my husband, Adam: Thanks for your willingness to always try my delicious (and sometimes crazy!) healthy recipes and for all of the fun we’ve had so far in the kitchen. Mahalo for running the deep sand beaches and killer hills with the dogs and me. But most of all, thank you for loving me like Jesus loves me.

978031073107_0008_003.jpgCHAPTER 1
In Total Confidence
Picture yourself slipping into the water, the waves brushing against your legs. Everything that’s going on in your life, all your worries and stress, just melt away as you step up on that board and glide across the water’s surface. Catching the best wave you can find, with each wave unique from the wave before. No matter how good or bad a session you might have, you’re having fun doing what you love, enjoying God’s beautiful creation and just being yourself … every single day. This is why I love surfing.
I began catching waves when I was a toddler. I was literally learning to surf and walk at the same time. I guess growing up in a house of ocean lovers will do that to you. Without a doubt, one of the first things surfing taught me was dedication.
Let’s start with my parents. If I didn’t have dedicated parents willing to sacrifice so much to take me to the beach every day (and not just because they wanted to zap the energy out of me and my brothers, Timmy and Noah, so we’d be mellow at night, although I like to joke that was part of it), I wouldn’t have gotten to where I am now.
I would go to surf competitions just about every other weekend. Even the little keiki surf contests my parents signed me up for when I was five showed me the importance of sticking to something you love. And I wouldn’t let anything strip me of that dedication, not even losing my left arm to a fourteen-foot tiger shark when I was thirteen.
As you might have noticed, I’m missing a piece of my body (hello, stating the obvious!). But it’s not a big deal, really. And even though I look different than most people, one arm is the normal me; it’s become a part of who I am. And the great thing is, I’m loved by God, one arm and all.
If you’re not familiar with my story, here’s what happened: On October 31, 2003, a shark attacked me while I was surfing off the north shore of Kauai. I lost over 60 percent of my blood and almost lost my life.
I faced two very intense surgeries and was in the hospital for about a week. My life definitely came to a screeching halt that scary morning. I had a lot to face. But with God’s help, my hope in him, and the passions he has given me, I came out of this one-armed—and determined. I was willing to stop at nothing to get back in the water and continue doing what I enjoyed. A month after the attack, that’s what I did.
And now I’ve been a professional surfer since I was seventeen. I work hard at the sport I adore. Working hard and having fun has helped me take everything I’ve learned and apply it to other areas of my life—most importantly, a rewarding, healthy lifestyle.
The changes I’ve made not only help me with my athletic performance, they’ve left me feeling incredible. Sure, I still have a lot to learn in my own journey, but the tidbits I have picked up and tested along the way are things I think everyone should try out.
You don’t need to drop a lot of money, spend hours and hours in the gym or give up the foods you enjoy (mmm, chocolate!) to feel—and look—amazing.
And no, you don’t have to be a pro athlete to get there either. (Of course, if you’ve developed some unhealthy eating habits, like frequent binges on chips or ice cream, you may have to find
