      Chapter One - Amy Takes a Ride

      Amy Lee woke up one morning and knew that this was the day to act! She dressed in her warmest and brightest clothes; a red, bulky jumper, red pants, yellow jacket, snow boots and a warm, woollen hat. She looked at herself in the mirror for several minutes critically and then walked down stairs and stirred up the embers of the dying fire in the pot belly stove.

      She went to a sideboard and opened a drawer and took out half a dozen white, addressed envelopes and placed them reverently on her dining room table. She had written the letters a few days ago, when the ‘great idea’ as she now began to think of it, came to her.

      They explained why she was doing what she would do and how, life no longer had any real meaning for her. Part of her knew that she would hurt those closest to her, but part of her, just didn’t care any longer!

      She filled a metal flask with brandy and took a jar of tablets from her bathroom cabinet. Now, she was ready!

      She shut the door of her small cottage and then stood and listened for any noise from the locals. She had lived in the small fishing town for over six months, but had made no friends or close acquaintances. In fact, she had been quite rude to the few friendly neighbours who had tried to get to know her. Mrs. Johnson next-door had been quickly repelled when she had tried to engage her in conversation. Amy merely wanted to be left alone!

      Fortunately, it was too early for many people to be about their daily activities. It was winter and the snow and ice in the rivers made fishing impossible, for only the most fool-hardy of men. Amy lived only a short distance from the river that ran hundreds of kilometres from the Rocky Mountains down to Mason Bay. Her small town was located only kilometres to where, the fast moving Canadian river spewed out into the Pacific Ocean.
