Nursing is an amazing line of work to go in to! You get to help save lives and help patients that are recovering from an illness or injury. There is nothing more amazing than seeing a patient come into your hospital in distress, and then a few days to sometimes a few months later, you get to see them leave your hospital with a smile on their face and/or hope in their eyes, and you know that you got to be a part of that!
But nursing isn’t always smiles and lifesaving. You see everything in this job, (and I do mean everything) and it’s not always pretty. Unfortunately, you do see patients die… for some it was just their time, but for others it was a tragedy. And you have to see patients at their worst, pooping and peeing their beds, which can be very humiliating for them. Or sometimes you get those patients that purposely aim for the floor! You find that this happens most often when a patient is detoxing.
As a nurse you have an opportunity to make a real difference in peoples’ lives. If you are willing to step out of the box you can make a HUGE difference that will affect them for the rest of their lives. Their life might be brief, as described in a few of these stories, but it might also go on for years. It’s your choice what kind of nurse you want to be and want kind of impact you want to have. I choose to be that nurse that wants to make a difference in a positive way! If you are going to pursue nursing, or are already a nurse, I hope that these stories will inspire you in one way or another!
This book contains a group of stories compiled over many years of nursing throughout different hospitals. These are stories of happiness, sadness, hilarity… and even a few that will make you angry. Most of these stories involved the author of this book, while others involved co-workers. But all of them are what you can expect to see in nursing! So hang on to your stethoscopes and read on about what makes this job so exciting!
A 94-year-old Baseball Fanatic
When nurses take care of patients we hear many of the same requests, every minute, every hour and every day. These requests are usually, when can I get my pain meds?
, where’s my dinner?
, I need to go to the bathroom, can you take me?
, can you empty my urinal?
, can I get my shower or sponge bath now?
, can you adjust my pillows?
, my blankets are wrinkled,
and of course, just to mention it one more time, I WANT MY PAIN MEDS!
But the one question I never thought I would hear coming from a 94-year-old female patient was Why can’t I find the Rockies game on the TV???
As it turns out, this beautiful little 110 pound patient of mine never missed a Rockies baseball game, and this inconvenient hospital stay was interfering with this. She always watched the game on TV, or listened on the radio, and knew all about the players including their baseball stats. She even knew about their families, impressing me even further! She was very frustrated and told me that she would have to leave the hospital if she couldn’t find the game on the television. Knowing her serious medical condition I knew that this really wasn’t an option for her and that I had to help. But unfortunately the hospital had limited cable television and it did not include the channel that aired the baseball games. Crazy, I know!
This was a deal breaker for my patient, but as it turned out, I was as much of a baseball fan as she was! And because of my addiction to baseball I had a subscription to the Major League Baseball website that allowed me to watch the games online! My little old patient was very happy with this news but made it very clear to me that I had to hurry up because she was already missing the first inning of the game. The pressure was on!
Now like most modern hospitals we have the fancy computers on wheels that we are able to roll up and down the hallways and into the patient rooms. But (and I’m sure you have already had this thought) it is against the rules to give a patient access to one of our computers. HIPPA and all that jazz. But in my defense this adorable little 94-year-old lady could not get out of bed, and as long as the computer wasn’t technically within reach, I felt like I wasn’t breaking too many rules by pulling up the baseball game for her. Besides, who can deny a little old lady like that?
So, I quickly ducked into her room pulling my unauthorized computer behind me. After much battling with the computer, and believe me when I say it was a battle, I was able to finally pull up the website to locate the game. I could feel her eyes burning into the back of my head and knew that I was going to be in trouble if I didn’t hurry. It was 8 p.m., the game was in the middle of the first inning (yes, I know, she missed the Rockies first at bat), and I now had the game running on the computer. I sat my adorable little lady up in bed, helped her put on her coke bottle glasses, fluffed her pillows, rolled the computer close enough that she could see it (but not close enough that she could touch it), and turned the volume up for her.
I left my patient to enjoy her baseball game while I went on about my business of doing actual nursing work. I returned to check on her about one hour later to see how she was doing and to make sure the computer was still working property. And of course, I wanted to check on the game for myself! I saw that the game was now in the 5th inning with the score tied 1-1. The Rockies were up to bat and you could feel the excitement in the air! There were runners on first and third base, with two outs, and our best batter was up to bat! The game was getting very intense as this rival team caused nothing but heartache for our beloved Rockies in the past. I looked at my little ole 94-year-old patient to see if she was as excited as I was. But instead, my very devoted dedicated baseball fan was right where I left her only one hour ago, however, she was now fast asleep with her chin
