About this ebook

What does the Bible really say about homosexuality and other acts of sexual immorality? The God who prohibited rape, bestiality, incest, prostitution, and, yes, homosexuality in the Old Testament did not change his moral values in the New Testament. The biblical view of sexual immorality and the Christian’s necessary Gospel response are detailed in this thorough study of what God, Jesus, and the apostles said about same-sex attraction, lifestyle, and other immoral sexual activity. Every important Old and New Testament scripture is examined and common objections to the biblical view are discussed. This is a work designed to strengthen and arm one’s faith in God’s moral values and Christian duty.

Preface

This book is not specifically apologetic (a formal defense of the faith) or polemic (an argument against false beliefs), although these aspects cannot be entirely avoided. The book is not intended to evangelize (to preach the gospel) or proselytize (to make converts to Christianity), although these aspects are naturally present in many of the scriptures cited and explanations given.

The primary purpose of this book is to explain the biblical doctrine of sexual morality in general and homosexuality in particular. The secondary purpose is to exhort Christians to practice the biblical morality God requires of his saved people. The practice of biblical morality is, in fact, morally required by God the Creator of every human being.

This book is written for Christians. That doesn’t mean there isn’t any profit for the non-Christian. I pray the person experiencing same-gender attraction or practicing same-gender sexual relations will read this book. The Bible states God’s standards for moral behavior for all persons, not just for those who believe in God through Jesus Christ. As the apostle Paul said to the Athenians—who were not Christians—God has set a day and time when he will judge the world according to his righteous standards, Acts 17:31. There is profit here for anyone who will apply the truth to their life.

The primary audience for this book is the person who professes Jesus Christ as God and Savior. You know who you are. Many of you go to church, follow the forms of worship, and participate in this or that program or ministry. You might go to a Bible study on Sunday morning, Wednesday evening, or some other time. You do your best to live as God commands. Some of you ignore much of what the Bible teaches. Because you don’t understand it. Because you think it doesn’t apply to modern times. Because you are holding so tightly to the values your culture has taught you that biblical truth cannot find entry into your soul. Genuine Christianity changes wants, needs, desires, beliefs, and behavior according to God’s values, principles, and precepts (rules/laws/commandments). You are my friends, said Jesus, if you do the things I command you to do, John 15:14. Every Christian should be a friend of Christ, which must include living according to his standards for sexual morality.

By the end of this book you should know God’s values, principles and precepts concerning sexual morality. You should know that the Old Testament precepts prohibiting sexual immorality remain in force today, and why. You should know that Old Testament moral standards are repeated in the New Testament. You should understand how sexual morality applies to yourself and to others. You should know your godly duty toward yourself and others concerning sexual morality. I have written should instead of will because nothing is learned and internalized without personal effort to learn, understand, and apply the truth.

The Christian’s relationship to God in Christ is to hear and obey, to learn and do. To hear and obey is the response of faith. Reading a book won’t give you the faith to hear and do . . . but it’s a start. I can explain what the Scripture teaches about sexual morality, but faith to hear and obey is between you and the Saviour.

Introduction

There is a difference between same-gender attraction and same-gender sexual relations. Same-gender attraction is a sin, because a violation of God’s moral values. But a person is not a practicing homosexual until same-gender attraction has become an identity and lifestyle, whether that occurs internally (in the mind), externally (physical sexual relations), or both. A practicing homosexual is a person who has turned same-gender attraction into an identity and lifestyle.

Same-gender attraction is a sin, one of the many consequences of the sin attribute distorting the human nature as it was created by God. Man fallen is but the anagram of man in innocency [Manton, Epistle of James, 73]. Every human attribute and affection has been transposed, misplaced, and reprioritized, in a word, jumbled, an anagram, by sin to serve self instead of God. Same-gender attraction comes from the same jumbled human nature as any other sinful inclination and disposition. So no form of same-gender attraction is moral or lawful in the biblical point of view, because it is an expression of the sin attribute in violation of God’s moral laws—as are many other inclinations and dispositions.

Salvation unjumbles the anagram of human nature caused by the sin attribute. Salvation restores the attributes of human nature to their right priority, to serve God not self. It takes time for that restoration to work itself out in one’s manner of living. The saved sinner must unlearn all the values and practices the world has taught him or her.

Some would say same-gender attraction is not who you are but how you are. When a person acts on same-gender attraction, either by focusing internally on the lust, or giving physical expression to the lust, then how you are becomes who you are (usually an internal focus leads to the external action; as with any immoral focus, such as adultery in one’s heart; what is in the heart usually expresses itself in action).

The problem is that acting on same-gender attraction, whether in the heart or in the body, creates an identity and lifestyle. And by, acting on same-gender attraction, I mean the same thing Jesus meant when he spoke of adultery: both the immoral desire that focuses the will upon the attraction, and the immorality of acting upon the attraction. When the inclination toward any particular sin (or group of sins) becomes an identity (e.g., the sin of self-righteousness), then the person will automatically reject any claim he/she is wrong because the claim threatens the person’s identity of him or herself. That rejection may even become violent; people protect their internal identity and act it out externally.

So, I make a distinction, I believe a valid distinction, that a person has not become a homosexual, which is to say, is not a practicing homosexual, until he or she has taken that step, whether internal or external, to form an identity and lifestyle out of same-gender attraction.

That distinction between attraction and action is important. It is the difference between an occasional feeling and the practice of immorality; between the appeal of sin (a temptation) and creating a sinful identity and lifestyle. That distinction between attraction and action is a bridge the person experiencing same-gender attraction can choose not to cross. It is a bridge salvation in Christ can destroy.

Terms and Definitions

In order to walk with me down the biblical path you must know some terms and definitions concerning sexual morality. Here at the beginning I’m not asking for agreement—conviction is the work of the Holy Spirit—I want you to know what I mean when I use certain terms.

Heterosexuality means opposite-gender attraction and opposite-gender sexual activity. The terms heterosexuality and heterosexual are used synonymously in this work.

Same-gender attraction means a person is attracted to someone of the same gender as him or herself, similar to the attraction a heterosexual person has for someone of the opposite gender as him or herself.

Same-gender sexual relations or same-gender sexual activity means a person is engaging in sexual activity with someone of the same gender as him or herself, similar to the way a heterosexual person engages in sexual activity with someone of the opposite gender as him or herself.

Same-gender attraction may be as simple as sexual orientation and desire without engaging in same-gender sexual relations. A person may experience a life-time of same-gender attraction without acting on those feelings. Same-gender sexual relations is acting on the desires caused by same-gender attraction in order to create a sexual identity and lifestyle.

Sexual relations means the entire range of possible sexual activity, including, but not limited to: physical, visual, and aural activity intended to stimulate sexual arousal; fellatio or cunnilingus; vaginal or anal intercourse. The list of possibilities is as endless as human imagination.

Homosexual is used in its original meaning of same-gender attraction and same-gender sexual relations. When sexual attraction occurs between persons of the same gender, that attraction is homosexual. When sexual relations occur between persons of the same gender, that sexual activity is homosexual. The terms homosexuality and homosexual are used synonymously in this work.

Homosexual applies to those activities and persons identified by the modern terms bi-sexual and transgendered. Males or females engaging in bi-sexual or transgendered same-gender attraction and same-gender sexual relations are homosexuals.

A male deliberately dressing and acting to appear outwardly female, or a female deliberately dressing and acting to appear outwardly male, if done for the purpose of same-gender attraction or same-gender sexual relations, is a homosexual.

A person who has physically altered or is attempting to physically alter him or herself by drugs and/or surgery to appear to be a sexual gender other than the gender determined by his/her genetic composition at conception, is a homosexual. I understand there are rare genetic and/or physical abnormalities present at conception or birth arising from various causes. I am not speaking of these exceptions. I am speaking of persons who are intentionally altering their appearance to appear to be a sexual gender other than their gender at conception.

The Bible defines normal sexual attraction and normal sexual activity as heterosexuality. No form of same-gender attraction or same-gender sexual activity is either moral or lawful according to God who created human kind as a heterosexual race of two genders.

Heterosexual sexual activity is moral and lawful only within the context of the marriage relationship. Marriage is herein briefly defined as an exclusive loyalty commitment made by one man and one woman
