About this ebook

An atmospheric ghost story. After many years apart Tom runs into his old friend Lenard, who convinces him it would be fun to revisit their old party spot at The Hoodoos late at night. The gate to the park is closed but Lenard has a 4x4. They set up their music to echo down the canyon like they did when they were young and despite some misgivings Tom starts to have fun. Then the glowing red orb appears. Lenard panics all out of proportion to the threat and Tom decides to find out why.
Pinnacles Provincial Park in Quesnel BC is a lot like the Hoodoos in this story and I actually did see a glowing red orb when I was partying there in the 1970's, and a few other small incidents in the story are autobiographical.

    Chapter 1

I didn’t know there was a gate here, Tom said, eying the big, bright yellow pipe that stretched across the single-lane access road, the glossy paint casting back a glare from the headlights. Twenty years ago the gate hadn’t been there and the road behind it had been two lanes wide, but now a heavy chain and a huge padlock anchored the gate to a steel post set in concrete, huge boulders blocked access around the gate, except for a narrow footpath, and beyond them the trees were too close together to allow passage of anything larger than a motorcycle. It’s closed. We can’t get in.

Lenard threw Tom a look that was part sneer. You’re half right. It is closed, but we can get in. He put his Toyota Rav mini-SUV four-wheel-drive into reverse and backed up in a tight quarter-circle. Better put your seat belt on, he said as he shoved the gearshift up into first, let out the clutch and headed for the ditch beside the entrance to the parking lot of The Pinnacles, more formally known, according to the sign, as Pinnacles Provincial Park.

Tom already had his seat belt on but he grabbed the door handle with one hand and reached out with the other to brace himself against the dashboard, wondering how he had let himself be talked into coming here.

He had spotted his old buddy Lenny in the cold beer and wine store at the Cariboo Hotel when he ran in to grab himself a couple of B-52 shooters for a nightcap. Hey, Lenny, you old party animal.

The man spun around and his face broke into a wide grin. Tom, you old dog, it’s good to see you. They shook hands and slapped shoulders. But I have too many gray hairs to be called Lenny anymore. Lenard or Len will do.

Sure thing, Lenard. Got time for a beer?

They went next door and found a table in the bar. Over a beer Lenard asked, What brings you up to Quesnel? I thought you were living down south.

Yeah, I’m manager at an Extra Foods store in Abbotsford. One of my nieces met a guy from Quesnel and they moved up here. I came up this week for their wedding, and to check out a few old haunts. Do you still live here?

"No, no, I moved to Prince George about
