      Life in Manhattan had become claustrophobic, suffocating. The lack of refuge from prying eyes, save within the walls of my dismal apartment, had commenced to rub my nerves raw, relegate me to an unremitting state of skittish pent-upness. The unrelieved stress of never being left to myself (not even in my apartment, actually: the woman to my right would rap on the wall at the slightest sound that issued from my activities, including speaking on the phone; the man below would bang on his ceiling, by way of informing me he could hear my footfalls; the couple who lived directly across from me in the building behind mine tirelessly argued at high volume, windows open, particularly at night) had affected me on a physical level: my hands seldom stopped shaking; my joints, particularly at my knees, ached, throbbed; my lower back was a minefield of muscle spasms, inflammation; a strained expression was stamped upon my face. For the first time in my life I thought of sleep as relief from conscious awareness instead
