Night Walker by Lisa KesslerA new take on vampires in this urban paranormal romance. First in the series. I wasn't sure about the hero in the beginning. He was cold (Literally!) and seemingly unfeeling. As we grew to know him better, his repressed personality came out more favorably. What I did like, was him preying on bad guys for his meals. Although they maybe didn't all deserve death, at least it wasn't the innocent. I do not want to include spoilers, but one of my pet peeves is when characters don't talk to each other. A little more disclosure earlier would have saved ...Overall, a good read. Entertaining if a bit on the dark side. I will be reading more of this author.

Lisa Kessler has created a wonderful world of romance, mystery and deception and as you read you find yourself caught up in the characters lives. You want them to make it. You root for the guy to get the girl, you root for the girl to realize how their lives intertwine through the ages. The vividness of this story is amazing. It plays out right before your eyes as you read it. Spell binding, sizzling, compassionate, there are so many ways you could describe the brilliant writing style that you're presented in Night Walker. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book!

I don't know how I feel about this book because of the ending. To me, the ending felt rushed, I also didn't feel the HEA. The book was good, I enjoyed the beginning and the middle. I just felt that there was more Kate wanted in life that Calisto couldn't give her. I just feel like there is something missing, the ending left me with more questions than answers.

3.5 stars because of the last few chapters. Even towards the middle, I couldn't see a happy ending for them or what their happy ending could be like. To not give anything away, I will say that I think some of the characters got a bad deal that shouldn't have happened. It wasn't necessary.

Night Walker is the first volume in The Night Series by Lisa Kessler. The story puts a new spin on the concept of “Vampires,” causing one to throw out all preconceived notions and re-evaluate what you already think about these creatures. You meet Calisto, and you learn that he is not actually a “vampire,” but is a “Night Walker.” While the creatures are very similar, there is just something different about them in this story.

The story follows many similar lines to what you expect in a Paranormal Romance, but at the same time, there are a few twists and turns that keep the story interesting.

Kate cannot seem to shake the feeling that she knows the man she is falling in love with more than she thinks, but cannot place why, and does not connect right away that they were together in a past life, which the reader is aware of from the outset.

The plot twists and turns keep your eyes riveted to the pages, and make you unable to walk away without knowing what will come next. There are a few scenes that are a bit graphic and will get your body temperature up, and I was sweating a little as I read them, but overall they were enjoyable.

My only complaint would be the cliffhanger ending, and having to wait to find out what the writer has in store for the characters to come. I hope you will give this book a chance, as it was definitely a good read.

When I was given the opportunity to participate in Lisa Kessler's virtual book tour, I jumped at the chance. You see, I have known Lisa for several years now (oddly enough, we met on MySpace) and I have followed her writing career, reading her stories and her updates regarding the novels she was working on and offering encouragement along the way. Night Walker was one of the novels she was working on during that time and I am pleased as punch for her and also so proud of her accomplishment.

Now I'm not a big reader of paranormal romance. In fact, I'm not much for romance novels at all. However, I had been reading Lisa's stories over the years and I really liked her style of writing. I am pleased to say that Night Walker just works on so many levels. First of all, anyone who knows me, knows I love the idea of reincarnation and this is an almost immediate premise in the book. Yes! And adding a love story along with reincarnation just makes it even better. But also, there are a moral implications at the base of the story that give it even more depth. I was pleased that the characters were likable and I developed an easy connection with them, with the exception of one very unlikable character, Jose, who is about as vile as they come. Don't worry...you're not supposed to like him. This really isn't a typical "vampire" novel, although many may try to pigeonhole it that way. As I said, it's more of a love story with a conscience. The moral issues were subtle, but recognizable. The displacement of Native Americans by the Spanish and the betrayal of the confessional by a monk (which leads to a despicable act) are the issues interlaced in the plot and I thought their presence added greatly to the depth of the novel.

I feel I must touch on the love scenes which are one of the reasons I tend to steer clear of the PR genre. I'm not fond of the explicit or overly erotic scenes. I have to send kudos Lisa's way. She really made the scenes sensual and classy (with the exception of Jose's scenes, but his aren't supposed to be). Would that other writers in this genre would take Lisa's lead and I just might become a convert!

Finally, the epilogue gives us an intriguing glimpse of what's to come as the Night series continues and I have to say...I can't wait! Well done, Lisa, on this wonderful first novel.

MY THOUGHTSLOVED IT***slight spoilers***Kate Bradley has strange dreams that seem to occur at the same time each year, but after her parents passed, she finds them recurring constantly. The strange thing about the dreams is that they seem so real and are about the same thing, her own death and a man that seems to possess her love and she returns the affection. After she catches her fiance with another women, she runs away from her teaching job as a choir director in Reno and returns home to San Diego to sell her parents' house. She goes to church where she meets a handsome man that she feels an immediate connection to and they keep meeting in different places. The man is Calisto Terana and she has been dreaming about him for years, but she just doesn't realize it yet.Calisto is a Night Walker, a shape shifting vampire that has a heart and he has waited for centuries for his one true love to come back to him. Kate is that love and she is physically marked for Calisto to find. Calisto is a former Catholic priest and the Church knows of his existence and wants to exterminate his kind as an abomination. This in turn puts Kate in danger and Calisto must protect her from harm. There is a lot of mixed metaphors and bits of Native American lore woven through. Rather than rely on a typical vampire romance, Kessler brings in a new twist through the use of reincarnation of Calisto's true love, Tala. The story is told via flashbacks to the 1770's and I really enjoyed the historical California aspect of this. Those chapters that showed Tala and Gregorio (Calisto) as lovers were my favorite in the whole book. Calisto really reminded me of Ricardo Montablan who had a lot of girls my age crushing in our tween years. Kate was likable, but at times I wanted to shake her and have her move on with her life. I was glad she finally got it together by the end of the book. Overall, this is a promising start to a series by a new to me writer and I look forward to another one in the series.

2.5 starsCalisto has waited and yearned for his beloved Tala to return to him, as prophesized more than 250 years ago. Accepting the burden of a horrific curse in a deal that promised him another chance with his one true love, finally Calisto may get the redemption he so desires. However, other forces intend to ensure that Calisto is thwarted fearing he may attempt to create another unnatural creature like himself. When Kate Bradley arrives in San Diego she is hardly looking for romance. She recently broke her engagement after discovering her fiancé with another woman. Plagued by recurring nightmares, Kate wants some solitude and peace to try to soothe her troubled soul. However, when Kate meets Calisto one evening while meditating an old shrine she is inexplicably drawn to his earnest, old-fashioned manner and almost courtly charm. Unfortunately, her nightmares seem worse than ever.I had a difficult time connecting with or liking Kate during much of the story. I would start to like her but then she would behave in a completely erratic manner. It also bothered me that Calisto’s home so blatantly seemed to cry out that it was not the abode of a normal person, yet Kate barely questioned the oddities. It seemed all the more bizarre to me because Calisto seems intelligent and worldly but he feels it is unnecessary to keep even a few food items in his kitchen, clothes in his closet, or personal items in his drawers – the rooms may be unused by him but surely he should comprehend the importance of maintaining a better façade for appearances sake. I just could not accept that, and so my suspension of disbelief became lost. Calisto knew that Kate could very likely be in serious danger, yet he continued to keep secrets from her in the guise of trying to protect her. I got very frustrated with this behavior and several times I just wanted to throttle him. Yet again, the dichotomy between his perceived intelligence and his actions just caused me to shake my head in disbelief. I wanted to like this novel more than I did. The idea of a man waiting 250 years for the return of his true love really appeals to me. I was put-off though by some of the religious aspects, by Kate’s personality, and by Calisto’s control issues combined with his sometimes singular naivety. I was, however, quite pleasantly surprised by the ending which I really loved. Reviewed by Laurie-J

Calisto has walked the earth for centuries, waiting for the woman he loves to return. Sometimes, he thinks she never will, despite what the Old One said. So Calisto waits, surviving on the blood of humans and hiding from the sun. Kate Bradley decides to return home to San Diego after breaking up with her fiancee, despite the painful memories of her parents' death or the recurring nightmares she suffers when home. Nightmares of a woman being hunted down and hurt, nightmares so real that Kate wakes screaming and in pain, so real they seem more like a memory.Kate is not looking for romance. But when she sees Calisto, she is inexplicably drawn to him. And Calisto knows that Kate is the reincarnation of the woman he loved so long ago. Now, he must protect her from enemies, both old and new, if their love is to survive.I really enjoyed Night Walker. It was well-written and fast-paced; it kept me turning pages to learn what would happen next. While this was a romance, it took awhile for the two main characters to make a connection. I actually enjoyed that! It was nice to read a story where the characters didn't hop in bed together right away. The flashbacks to Calisto's and Kate's former lives were perfectly placed and they added to the beauty of the story. I envied Kate and Calisto's love. It was pure and fresh and exciting. This was a fun summer read!

Night Walker is the first book of a new series from Lisa Kessler. The story is about a man, Calisto, who lost the love of his life when she was murdered and gave up his soul for another chance with her. He has waited centuries for her to return and he believes her soul is now in the body of Kate Bradley. Kate has recently had her heart broken and not really looking for a new relationship, but is drawn to Calisto and has a hard time resisting his charm. This book does tell a story about Night Walkers and what being one entails, but the romance was by far the focus. I usually like my action and romance to have an equal balance in books, but I did not miss the action so much while reading. The relationship really is the crux of the story and without building the foundation between Calisto and Kate, the book would have been left lacking. While we are in present day learning about how Calisto and Kate meet, we also get glimpses into their past life when Calisto was still Father Gregorio and Kate was Tala. When there is a backstory to be told it can often times be put in the prologue and then we shift to modern day. With Night Walker, we get the story of their past in small doses through the novel and I found it weaved into the overall story better this way. There were a couple of things that did bother me while reading this book. The biggest one was Kate herself. I understand that she feels this magnetic pull towards Calisto because they shared a past life together, but she does not know that. She goes through his house at one point to find that he has no clothes, no food and no other everyday items that a person would need to live. She does find this strange, but does not really press Calisto about it and instead she moves in with him. They had been together a couple of days at this point and Calisto did this because Kate was in danger, so it makes perfect sense to try and keep her close, but again, Kate did not know this. Maybe I am being a little too cynical, but I would find all this very suspicious and would have to learn more about someone before I moved in with them. Especially if his behavior was strange like Calisto’s is and because of his lack of basic things needed to live. Her gut was telling her something was off and I just wanted her to investigate that a little more before falling into Calisto’s arms. While the book did have a couple of flaws, overall I still enjoyed the story. There were some ups and downs, but I was invested in Calisto and Kate’s lives because I really connected with them as a couple. This is the first in a series and I am very intrigued to see where Lisa will take this next, especially after that very last paragraph. I thought Lisa might have a twist in there somewhere, but I did not predict what would happen there on that last page. I will be very interested to see where that goes and what the future now holds for Calisto and Kate.
