About this ebook

This workbook is intended to assist those persons who are ready to recognize and take stock of their lives, regarding the issues of anger, drugs or alcohol. We must each find a set of rules to live by. These rules may have a spiritual basis, be a set of ethics, or they may be values passed down to us. They may also be a set of rules we have searched after ourselves. These rules must be ones that help each of us to reach our potential, while at the same time helping others.

Without such a set of rules, we will fail in maneuvering through this earthly life. This workbook is intended to assist those persons who are ready to recognize and take stock of their lives, regarding the issues of anger, drugs or alcohol.

The qualifications I bring to this teaching task are varied. Having lived with anger issues in my own family, I learned early on that answers were available if we seek them. After substitute teaching for fifteen years, much insight was gained as to issues families, students and teachers face. Mediation training and two years experience in this field brought knowledge of the difficulties one faces when entering the justice system. Teaching Adult Anger Control for thirteen years has put me on the front lines, and I see the difficulties clients face when they must look to themselves to turn their lives around. Through this curriculum, I have been able to see lives changed, insight gained, and hope given that corrections regarding these issues are truly attainable. I believe these years of experience cannot be matched. In 1998, I was awarded the Heart Award by the Community Justice Center in Anderson Indiana. In 1999, I was awarded the Val B. Clear Award for having exemplified the spirit of Community Corrections in Madison County, Indiana.

Inside an Anger Management Class - Patty Shelby

This workbook is dedicated to all of my past students. Through time spent with them, this curriculum has grown, as much as they have. They have changed my life and deepened my understanding of what it takes to risk change in our life.

I would also like to thank the Pendleton Reformatory of Anderson, Indiana, for their assistance, early on, in supplying material to begin this program.

A special thanks also to S. Hudson and C. Bellessis, for their editing skills.

The video of Danny Trejo, I speak of in this workbook, is intended for those eighteen years and older. His production company is working on a video for junior high and high school students.

    Author Introduction

While teaching Adult Anger Control for 13 years, it became apparent early on that too often, people dealing with this issue do not understand the underlying causes of their anger. This workbook is designed to assist most people dealing with this issue.

I am a wife and mother of two daughters. When this all started, I had been a substitute teacher. Both of our daughters were raised. I quit substitute teaching to watch our first grandchild while both of his parents worked. After a couple of years, I found I had time on my hands, so I signed on for a mediation class at the local Community Justice Center. This was a volunteer position that I found extremely satisfying. My clients were court ordered into mediation for various offences. Mediation is now being used in schools and other areas. This process of mediation and its successes will be spoken of in more depth later.

When our second grandson came along, I could no longer schedule my time as freely. When I told my director that I could no longer mediate, she asked me if I could take an evening Adult Anger Control class. The only problem was that there was no curriculum for this class. After some searching and with the help of a prison administration near my home, a curriculum was born. Over |he years video and other materials were added.

Early on, older teens and adults shared this class. The director and I decided this wouldn't work because the issues adults and young teens face could not be fully addressed in the class time allowed. Once the age range was established, we focused on those eighteen years and older.

The clients, who were court ordered into this anger class, came from all walks of life, all races, and all economic levels. Their ages ran from eighteen to seventy. The class was made up of both male and female. Some were professional, and some were not.

Mrs. Shelby conducted Anger Management classes for over 10 years for the Pre-Trial Diversion Program. These classes were held four times a year and ran for four weeks.

At the time Mrs. Shelby came to the Community Justice Center, to volunteer her time, she worked with our Mediation Coordinator Diane Harney. Mrs. Shelby designed the entire curriculum for Anger Management Classes and was very instrumental in assisting and setting up the Adult Pre-Trial Program.

    Class Evaluations

At the end of my classes I ask my students to evaluate this material and me. They did not have to put their names on their evaluation. Their evaluations could relate to any facet of the class. This would include written material, lecture, class discussion or videos.

Once class begins, the adults begin to see that there is more to this issue than they realized. They are open to discussion, willing to ask questions and seek changes in their lives.

    Just A Few Evaluation Statements

Wonderful! I started to apply what I was learning the first day of class. I wish I could have spent more time in this class. Thanks a Lot.

I personally feel that everyone should take this class. I feel I am a better person for having had it. God Bless.

This class rates a ten. It was very enjoyable. You were a good teacher. Thanks.

This class has helped me to look at life differently, be happier, use more self-control, love more and think more clearly. — Joshua
