      When I first decided to write this book and start on this journey, I knew that my friends and family would be supportive.       Welcome to The Music Initiative! I hope that you enjoy participating in these activities as much as I enjoyed compiling them for you. I felt a lot of creative energy as I was developing this product, and I encourage all of you to tap into your own creative expression as you enjoy these activities with your child. Use your own strengths, talents, and knowledge to enhance experiences while building a foundation through music activities from which you, your child and family can form stronger, more engaging bonds.

      Some of you may be familiar with music therapy already. For those who are not, the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) defines music therapy as:

      [The] clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program (2005).

      While this product is based on the tenets of music therapy as defined by the AMTA, it is in no way a comprehensive, clinical approach. Rather, it is a guide to assist in bringing music therapy-based activities to individuals who may not have a musical background or access to music and music therapy.
