Gandhiji is the father of our nation India. We call him Bapu. His full name was Mohandas Karmchand Gandhi. He was born at Porbandar in Gujarat on 2nd October 1869. This day is celebrated as ‘Gandhi Jayanti’ by us.

Gandhiji was very simple even in his childhood. He never fought with anyone and did not life to play much. He used to climb trees and admire nature. One day he was sitting on the branch of a tree. His elder brother came near him and pulled his legs down. Gandhiji fell down from the tree with a thud. He ran to his mother crying and complained about his brother. His mother laughed and replied, Why don’t you do the same to him. This way the score will get even. Why have you come running to me?

He is older to me. How can I hit him?

Children fight and make up. It’s not an issue. Mother replied.

He shouted at his mother saying, What kind of a mother are you? You don’t scold the one who has hit me, but are teaching me to hit him instead. Is it right to hit one’s own elder brother? Mother at once took him in her lap and asked adoringly, Tell me! From where do you learn such things? When he was in class V, his father brought him a play titled, ‘Shravan Kumar’. Gandhiji read it again and again.

‘Shravan Kumar’ had a great impact on him. He constantly thought of Shravan Kumar’s sufferings and his undying love and affection for his parents. ‘If Shravan Kumar could tirelessly serve his parents, even he could do it! Even he could choose the path taken by Shravan Kumar.’ He kept on thinking to himself.

He was greatly inspired by a picture in that play. The picture was of wounded Shravan Kumar lying on a river bank. He had gone for a pilgrim, carrying his blind parents on his shoulders and was hit by King Dashratha’s arrow. In that picture he was saying to the King, Kindly stop worrying about me. My blind parents are sitting under a tree. They are very thirsty. Please go to them and give them some water to drink. Mohandas decided that like Shravan Kumar, he too would fulfil his parent’s wishes and serve them throughout his life.

He wanted to know more about his ancestors. He was deeply affected by the life story of King Harishchandra. How he sold his wife and son for the sake of truth! Mohandas was also impressed by Ramayana. He pledged to shape his character in the likeness of Shri Rama, Sita and Laxmana who went to exile, honouring the promise given by their father, King Dashratha to his wife Kakeyi.

Thus Gandhiji never left the path of truth and righteousness. In school it was compulsory to participate in sports. Gandhiji disliked sports and preferred to spend his time studying. Those who didn’t participate were fined. Once he couldn’t reach the sports-field on time due to some work at home. The teacher asked the reason for delay and Mohandas told him to truth. The teacher thought that he was making an excuse and fined him. Mohandas began to cry. A friend saw him crying and said, Why do you cry? Your father is a rich man and can easily pay the fine.

He replied, "I am not crying for the fine. I am crying because the teacher thinks I
