Introduction - How to Understand the Book of Revelation

Revelation is probably the most controversial and mysterious book of the bible. It appears God saved the best for last! Revelation is the ONLY book of the Bible that promises blessings to those who read or hear it! This is probably because it contains the revelations of Jesus Christ Himself.

It was penned by the apostle John. John was very dear to Jesus during Jesus time on earth. He was the youngest of the apostles. He not only wrote the book of revelation but also the Gospel of John. John was given care of Jesus Mother Mary. Domitian arrested John when he was 90 and sent him to Patmos. He remained there for 18 months. Patmos was located off of Turkey.

How coincidental that Hermes was the idol of Patmos, and Hermes stands for "the messenger to the Gods!" How appropriate that the all powerful God gave his message to mankind from here! John died around 100 A.D. after he had been released from exile.

Revelation was written around AD 95 and based on historical timelines - it was written during the reign of Roman ruler Domitian. Titus Flavius Caesar Domitianus Augustus; 24 October 51 – 18 September 96 was Roman Emperor from 81 to 96 AD. Domitian was the third and last emperor of the Flavian dynasty.

As you read the book, keep in mind that the Roman Empire ruled the world at the time John penned Revelation, so that references to a future one world government, religion and economy would, by necessity use Rome representatively. This explains why inferences to Rome, the city of seven hills, are sprinkled throughout the book of Revelation; particularly in Revelation 17 and 18.

This last book of the bible, not only reveals things to happen in the last days (it is truly loaded with prophesy), but more importantly it reveals and celebrates Jesus victory and triumph over evil, and his coronation as the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords forevermore! Indeed the first versus of the bible tells us that the book is primarily written to reveal who Christ really was, and is. This last book illustrates God's patience in allowing rebellious mankind many opportunities to repent before the hammer falls.

The book, which in Greek is called the Apocalypse, is riddled in symbolism. So it can be quite confusing for those who do not understand some basic concepts. Symbols may be used to protect the messenger (John from Roman persecution), and to confound the fallen and unbelievers Proverbs 25:2. The first important concept to understand is that the book of revelation interprets itself for us!

We must understand as we study this incredible book of prophecies that the book of Revelation was written in symbols because at that time, the Christians were under persecution by the Romans. Cesar expected all to honor only him as God, and no one else! So those who honored Jesus and the church would be martyred.

Revelation contains numerous Old Testament prophecies from Daniel, Jeremiah, Ezekiel and others. It is like a compilation of many Old Testament and New Testament prophecies. The judgments of revelation are broken down in 3 groups of 7. Each group of seven has 6 consecutive judgments and then the 7th is like an interruption, like a break in the action, or a period of rest; like a Sabbath day of rest (Genesis 2:2).

The book of revelation validates other prophecies in the bible - Such as the following:

    - Revelation 12:1 corresponds to Joseph's vision in Genesis 37:9-10

    - The 42 month tribulation period was revealed to Daniel in Daniel 7:25

    - The battle of Gog and Magog of Revelation 20:8 is revealed in Ezekiel 38 and 39

    - The war in heaven between Michael and Satan in Revelation 12:7 is mentioned in Daniel 12:1

In addition to John the prophets also saw the Lord on his throne….

    - Isaiah saw the Lord Isaiah 6:1

    - Daniel, and Ezekiel also saw the lord at His throne in Daniel 7:9; and Ezekiel 1:26 respectively.

The book of Revelation consists of some dualities and that is why it is confusing to many who delve into it for the first time without understanding these principles. Duality in this sense means that certain terms have more than one meaning. For example a certain event may apply not just to the past, but also to the present and or the future. Also, certain terms or symbols may apply to more than one person, place or thing. For example the seventh angel who coordinates and introduces each of the 3 series of judgments (the Seal, Trumpet and Bowl judgments) may be Jesus Christ Himself since he is the only one worthy to judge the world!

Duality is common not just in Revelation but throughout the Bible. Jesus confirmed dual applications of some prophecies. For example, in Matthew 17:11-12, when He was asked about the prophecy of Elijah (Malachi 4:5) who would precede the coming of the Messiah, Jesus said: Indeed, Elijah is coming first and will restore all things. But I say to you that Elijah has come already … Matthew 17:11-12

Many people do not understand that most of Revelation was foretold by the prophets in the Old Testament and in the gospels. Regarding the plagues, some are similar to the plagues that afflicted Egypt because of Pharaoh's hardened heart prior to God liberating the Jews from bondage from Egyptian captivity. Exodus 5-14. This is why many have been misled by those (Preterists) who claim that the Revelation of John already took place in the first century. Revelation 9:3-5 = demon locusts - many interpret it as the Turkish hordes that did battle.

Sadly too many folks do not have the desire of heart to research prophecies that seem hard at first to understand. They prefer entertainment rather than wisdom. Many have never read further than the first chapter before giving up. Yet the closer we get to the time of the end, the clearer it will all be, because the prophecies will become the reality, and by then it may be too late to be prepared, either mentally, spiritually or emotionally. I pray that this book will inspire you to seek the knowledge and spiritual fortitude needed to persevere through the tribulations that lay ahead for all of us.

Just like you, when I first read revelation, I was so confused I had to read it several times and still I had no clue. I prayed for wisdom, and through years of study, I now understand clearly enough that I felt compelled in my spirit to share my knowledge with you; in hopes that this will save you all of the time it took me to unlock many of these mysteries. I have rushed to publish this book through the later part of 2013 and into 2014 because I truly believe that now is the time for this message to reach the masses - because the time of the end is at hand!

As you read Revelation, keep in mind that all prophecy everything regarding the geography of the earth is from the perspective and location of Israel - God's land. So when you read south means south of Israel, and north would be a location north of Israel.

There are many similarities of what Daniel in the book of Daniel and John in the book of Revelation saw:

    1) Both received visions of a 7 year period (Dan. 9:27; Rev. 11:2, 13:5)

    2) Both identified the antichrist as a beast (Dan. 7:7; Rev. 13:1)

    3) Both saw a final 42 months full of chaos, confusion and calamities (Dan.12:7; Rev. 11:3, 12:6)

    4) Both prophets saw the archangel Michael (Dan. 12:1; Rev. 12:7)

    5) Both had visions of the resurrection of the dead (Dan. 12:2; Rev. 20:4)

    6) Both saw 10 kings upon the head of the beast (Dan. 7:24; Rev. 13:1)

They both had the same vision, but unlike Daniel, in revelation John also sees the false prophet.

Chapter 1 - From the Beginning

In the cover of this book you see an illustration of Leo the Lion and Draco the Dragon. I believe that from the beginning of time, God wanted us to know the outcome of the cosmic battle between good and evil. My cover features Leo the Lion, a symbol of the Lion of the Tribe of Judah, bruising the head of the dragon, a symbol of the serpent - Satan. This is displayed in the heavens above for all to see! Upon reading this book, you will clearly understand the significance of this sign that God gave to each of us.

While the book of Revelation is loaded with shocking end day prophecies, many of the prophecies in Revelation were also prophesied by the major prophets of the Old Testament such as Daniel, Isaiah, Ezekiel and Jeremiah.

If by chance you have skipped the introduction to this book, I strongly urge you to read it before you continue on, because it covers some important concepts that will help you better understand the book of revelation; the marvelous last book of the bible.

Why will there be a Tribulation Period?

God and Jesus cannot return to establish His kingdom in a corrupted earth - it must first be cleansed and refined with fire. Man has had 6 thousand years to make a mess on earth and now just before the 7 thousandth year God must pour out his wrath on an unrepentant mankind because of all of the iniquity accumulated in their 6000 year existence on this planet.

The day of the Lord is a day (a period of time - seven years) when the following is accomplished…

    - The proud and arrogant shall be humbled (Isaiah 2:12)

    - It will be a day of destruction from God (Isaiah 13:6)

    - God avenges Himself of His enemies (Jeremiah 46:10)

    - There will be many signs in the skies as the sun and moon darken (Joel 2:31)

    - It shall be a day of utter darkness - symbolic of all the evil on the earth (Amos 5:18)

The early Christians were persecuted in Rome because they refused to worship their emperor. The Roman Empire required the worship of their emperor - the emperor was considered their God. This is the same type of system that the antichrist will establish during the tribulation period.

The day of the Lord is a day of vengeance from God upon a world that refuses to repent and continues to sin against the Lord (Zephaniah 1:14-17; Jeremiah 46:10; Isaiah 13:6). It will be punishment form the almighty (just like the great flood was).

The book of Revelation proves that judgment is necessary since despite all of the judgments that God pours down on mankind, many stubbornly refuse to repent and give up the desires of the flesh, and therefore choose to worship Satan instead of God! So they worshiped the dragon who gave authority to the beast; and they worshiped the beast, saying, 'Who is like the beast? Who is able to make war with him?' (Revelation 13:4).

How extensive will this idolatrous worship be? "All who dwell on the
